Barcelona defender takes a possible dig at Ernesto Valverde

barcelona-nelson-semedoEven though the Catalan outfit are performing in the worst manner which dates back to their worst in the past 25 years which repeated under Ernesto Valverde, there have been bright spots for the club. Among those few bright spots, Nelson Semedo has been the brightest.

Even as Barcelona steadied their sinking ship with the return of their living legend, Lionel Messi and fighting back to the top of the table, Nelson Semedo still finds himself in the group consisting of Marc Andre Ter Stegen, Lionel Messi and Clement Lenglet who were said indispensable by Ernesto Valverde and club hierarchy. When the things seemed to be going alright for the player, an injury against Celta Vigo forced him to be out for five weeks wherein the player was diagnosed for a calf injury.

semedo and valverdeDuring his injury recuperation, he had to see the most painful thing for any player. The player’s spot being occupied by another player. In Semedo’s case, it was Sergio Roberto, a La-Masia academy graduate who took up the starting spot of the player. With things moving very quickly, Portuguese international’s future was negotiated by his agent Jorge Mendes and club hierarchy over Christmas and New Year.

With the re-emergence of the player like Sergi Roberto, Nelson Semedo was considered as a surplus requirement at Camp Nou. It seemed that the player would be offloaded in the winter transfer window itself. However, any breakthrough deal couldn’t happen and the player remained in Catalan camp itself.

Hitting the goal post against Levante in a fine Camp Nou display earlier in January, the player has offered the attacking width over the right flank which was visibly low for Barcelona in recent times. The strong performances from the player has continued to go on where he performed spectacularly against Atletico Madrid and Real Betis.

Talking to the leading sports daily after a hard-fought win against Real Betis by a scoreline of 3-2, A Bola, the Barcelona fullback  owed his reversal of fortunes and said:

‘Things are going well for me, the new coach trusts me a lot and what I do is work as hard as I can to justify that confidence,’

‘This is perhaps my best season at Barcelona,’ he continued. ‘I’m very happy with what is happening with me, [and] it is just a pity that the team is not in the first place. But there is still a lot of the championship to go and we can still become champions,
