Barcelona faces Granada in Sunday night’s La Liga encounter at Camp Nou. Can reigning champions Barcelona make a winning start to life under new manager Quique Setien?

FC Barcelona

Despite dominating for most of the game, late goals from Alvaro Morata and Angel Correa condemned Barcelona to a 2-3 defeat against Atletico Madrid in last week’s Supercopa de Espana semi-finals, a result which ultimately spelled the end for manager Ernesto Valverde, despite the 55 year-old overseeing convincing title triumphs in the last two seasons.

The swift arrival of former Real Betis boss Quique Setien suggests, however, that Valverde’s sacking had been on the cards for some time; he has ultimately paid the price for domestic cup and Champions League failings over the past 24 months. Setien’s appointment will be a surprise to many considering the 61 year-old boasts a rather modest 37% win ratio throughout his managerial career, although his expansive, possession-based style should suit the Catalan giants well.

Barca begin life under Setien against Granada at Camp Nou this Sunday night and they should make a winning start based on their excellent home record and Granada’s troubles on the road. The hosts are unbeaten at Camp Nou this term, winning eight from nine in La Liga, and seven of those victories have been clinched by a three-goal margin or more.

Granada

Granada pulled off one of the shocks of the season when beating Barca 2-0 at Los Carmenes in September’s reverse fixture, but the chances of Nazaries completing a league double here look highly unlikely. After riding high at the start of the campaign, the limitations of Diego Martinez’s side have been somewhat exposed over the last couple of months; they head to Camp Nou off the back of five straight away defeats in the top flight.

Nazaries have lost all those fixtures by at least a two-goal margin and have failed to score in their last three outings on the road. Currently 10th with 27 points on the board, Granada’s fine start to the season should ensure they have enough to stave off an immediate return to the second tier this term; they are still picking up enough results at home as demonstrated by wins over Alaves (3-0) and Mallorca (1-0) at Los Carmenes in the past month.

We certainly expect them to slip further down the standings, though, during the second half of the season. Their dismal form on the road, as well as the huge difference in quality between the sides, strongly suggests Nazaries are in for a tough evening at Camp Nou this Sunday.

The Barcelona players will have felt deeply frustrated after throwing away a 2-1 lead against Atleti in Saudi Arabia and we expect an immediate riposte from them this weekend – especially as the Catalans have a new manager at the helm to impress. The hosts have averaged almost four goals per game at Camp Nou this season and should be able to enhance their record of wide-margin home wins this season against a Granada backline that have leaked 14 goals in their last five away matches.

Barca will want to win this convincingly to get themselves firmly back on track.

The league leaders have kept just one clean sheet in their last five La Liga games at home; however Granada have been toothless up front on their travels of late, failing to net in their last three outings.

BAR VS GRD: Best players

Barcelona

Who else but the little magician. With Barcelona going through a bit of a lean patch, having won just one of their last five matches across all competitions, they will look up to their captain and talisman Lionel Messi to help them out of a difficult situation.

Messi has scored 11 goals in his 11 La Liga games against Granada and eight in his five appearances against them at Camp Nou, scoring two hat-tricks and a brace. Expect him to step up to the plate and deliver the goods for Barcelona, helping them get things back on track.

Granada

Machis and Antonio Puertas, who is Granada’s top scorer this term with four strikes to his name, will occupy the flanks and look to provide meaningful service for star striker Roberto Soldado.
