Best Bowling Performances of Trent Boult in IPL

Trent Boult, the speedster from New Zealand, is a very decorated cricketer in international cricket. He has great numbers to his name with a Blackcaps jersey. But all those statistics take a nosedive when it comes to the Indian Premier League. His debut in the tournament was in 2015.

Since then, he has played at least one match every season but has never really caught everyone’s attention except for once. This is a reason why Boult’s teams change frequently. But as we saw a couple of years ago, he is very dangerous when he is on the form. Despite not boasting of great numbers, he has bowled a few great spells.

We start off our list of top 5 bowling performances of Trent Boult in IPL with a game from last season. This performance from Boult took place when Delhi Capitals welcomed Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Batting first, Royals had a horrible start as Ishant Sharma rattled the top-order.

Boult joined the mix in the slog overs. His first victim of the match was his fellow Kiwi Ish Sodhi. Then again at the last over of the innings, he got the wicket of Riyan Parag. More than his wickets, his economy rate of under 7 runs per over helped the Capitals in restricting Royals to 115.

Boult ended up taking 18 wickets in the 2018 season, which can be regarded as the only successful season of his IPL career so far. This match between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab is from that year, held at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Here again, Boult had to bowl first.

Punjab had a fairly decent start, with the likes of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal in the groove. Here again, Boult was very late to the party and his two wickets were of tail-enders Ravichandran Ashwin and Andrew Tye. But him being on the economical side helped Capitals restrict Punjab for 143 runs.

3. 3/36 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

Boult’s first season in IPL, 2015, cannot be regarded as a failure by any means. He picked up 9 wickets in 7 games and conceded runs at an economy rate of just over 8 runs per over. This spell is from a 2015 game when Boult’s then team, Sunrisers Hyderabad took on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Bowling first, Hyderabad didn’t have the start that they would have wanted. After Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli laid the foundation down, it was time for the likes of AB de Villiers to do their magic. But Boult got rid of him, again near the very end, alongside two others in Sean Abbott and Harshal Patel. His spell helped SRH contain RCB under 170, which was eventually proved to be not a big target to chase down.

Boult’s best spell ever in IPL came in an orange jersey in his debut season. It was a game between Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the IS Bindra Stadium. Batting first, Hyderabad could only post a modest total of 150. This time, however, Boult was on song from the very beginning.

He handed Hyderabad their first wicket in the third over, in the form of Manan Vohra. But from then onwards it was mostly calm, with Boult keeping a check on the flow of runs. He customarily came to life at the death, picking up two more wickets in the form of Axar Patel and Wriddhiman Saha. His spell helped Hyderabad win the match comfortably.
