One of the best parts of IPL is uncertainty and SUPER OVER is that uncertain factor that cricket fans wait for. Here we look at the list of the top five Super Overs in IPL history that hooked the cricket fans.

Rajasthan Royals VS Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2009 season

The first-ever Super Over in the Indian Premier League was witnessed in the 2009 season between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in South Africa. Both teams scored 150 runs in their respective 20 overs which winded up with a tie. Fans witnessed an outstanding knock from former cricketer Sourav Ganguly, who scored 46 runs off 30 balls.

KKR in the Super Over amassed 15 runs with Chris Gayle hitting three fours in the Super over. While on the other side, Yusuf Pathan from Rajasthan Royals smashed the needed 16 runs in only four balls. Pathan’s performance assisted Rajasthan Royals to win the game, making history, and becoming the first-ever team to won IPL Super Over.

Chennai Super Kings VS Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2010 season

This one is regarded as one of the most exciting and interesting matches in the history of the Indian Premier League. Fans had their eye glued at the ground as world-class cricketers MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh were trying to emerge victorious in two limited overs. KXIP opted to bat first and scored 130 runs in 20 overs.

CSK went wild at the beginning of the game, scored 97 runs after losing just two wickets in 12.5 overs. But as they begin to fall, they lost six wickets, needed 10 runs in the final over. However, CSK batsman can only score 9 and the match was tied which lead to a super over. CSK batted first in Super Over and scored 10 runs with the help of Suresh Raina while KXIP easily chased the target with Mahela Jayewardene scoring 6 runs and Yuvraj scoring the rest.

Royal Challengers Bangalore VS Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2013 season

IPL 2013 was an eye drooling season too. It was the second Super Over of the tournament and second for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the same year. RCB was playing versus Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and they had already lost the previous match in Super Over elimination by 5 runs.

Daredevils managed to score 152 runs after losing five wickets in 20 overs. All batsmen contributed some runs, but what helped magnificently was the partnership between Irfan Pathan and Jadhav of 30 runs. While on the other hand, RCB with the assistance of batsmen Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers scored 103 runs before losing the third wicket. But, suddenly RCB saw wickets and balls falling off like rolling stones which led to another tie, leading to a super over. RCB scored 15 runs. Delhi could not reach the target and managed only 12 runs. It was RCB bowler Ravi Rampaul that restricted Delhi and helped the team win.

Mumbai Indians VS Gujarat Lions in the 2017 season

A match that was remembered for days. Jasprit Bumrah’s highly exceptional bowling saved Mumbai Indians again in the death over along with a Super Over. Gujarat Lions’ now-defunct team took batting first and managed to score 153 runs with a loss of nine wickets in 20 overs. But, surprisingly bowling performance of Basil Thampy turned the entire table upside down as he bagged two wickets in the 19th over.

The nail-biting final over led to a tie, leading into ‘SUPER OVER’. Mumbai Indians took batting and Kieron Pollard went on the field and managed to score 11 runs. Bumrah with his bowling skills restricted KXIP batsmen as they could score only five runs in one over. Mumbai clinched off the match and win by five runs.

Kings XI Punjab VS Mumbai Indians in the 2020 season

First time in IPL history that the day went into two Super Over in the same match. Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab in Dubai was a nail-biting match. Fans witnessed boundaries after boundaries, hit by Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle ripping off Trent Boult’s bowling. Batting first Mumbai Indians scored 176 runs after losing six wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

And Deepak Hooda batting for the first time in IPL 2020 for Kings XI Punjab now Punjab King scored 23 and not out. However, Punjab failed to reach the target of 176 runs and ran into the first Super Over. In the first Super Over both teams have scored five runs each, thus led to another Super Over, which KXIP won.
