Major Highlights of Wimbledon 2019:  It was a grand event with some special happenings including the 15-year-old Cori Gauff beating Venus Williams, Halep fulfilling his mum’s dream and much more. Here we take a look at the 5 highlights of the event:

#1 Djokovic Creates History, Defeats Roger Federer in the Longest Final Battle Ever
Major Highlights of Wimbledon 2019Novak Djokovic defeated Roger Federer in the epic match to win his fifth ever Wimbledon title in what followed to be the longest final match ever. The game lasted for 4 hours 57 minutes. It was a final of high quality with both players playing beautiful shots and with serves of high quality. It was a nail-biting final and went down to the wire.

For both Federer and Djokovic, they lost the opportunities in various intervals to get hold of the set, thereby extending the match time longer. Djokovic held his nerve and stayed in the game, waiting for his opposite player to make mistakes. It was although a memorable final for Djokovic as he defended his title this year, beating Federer in the tie-breaker of the final set of the match. On his win Djokovic said, “If not the most exciting and thrilling finals of my career, in the top two or three and against the greatest player of all time.” 

Whereas Federer quoted “I feel great, I gave it all I had, I’m still standing. I’ll take some time to recover.” He also said, “hopes it gives other people hope they can do this at 37. I’m one of them. It’s extra special with my son in the crowd, and my family too. My wife and daughter are here in London but watching at home, and I give them a big, big hug.”

#2 The Final Crown- Wimbledon Final Witnessed Star-Studded Crowd
Wimbledon Men’s ‘19 final witnessed the most star studded audience to witness the two great grass-court players in action. Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were among the famous faces in attendance. Legendary Boris Becker, Rod Laver, Stefan Edberg were also in attendance to witness the great spectacle.

Avengers stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Tom Hiddleston were also seen watching the players in action.

It was a jam-packed final which witnessed around 15000 people, while other celebrities, star athlete and tennis legends reacted on social media. The crowd gave a standing ovation to both Djokovic and Federer on each of the games they won.

#3 Simona Halep Creates History: Wins the Wimbledon Title

Simona, who created history by beating the former champion Serena Williams, won her first Wimbledon title. The Romanian won 6-2, 6-2 in front of the massive crowd, running after everything Serena threw at her. As Halep said, although, she was under no great pressure to win, it was a very crucial final match of her life. She played with a fearless approach, giving her best throughout the game where Serena had no answer. 

I knew that I have to be aggressive, be 100% for every ball and that I don’t have to let her come back into the match because she’s so powerful and so strong,” Halep said. “She knows how to manage every moment. So I knew that I have to stay there, which I did pretty well today,” Halep told in the post-match interview.

I’m very sure that was the best match of my life,” said Halep, a former No. 1 and French Open champion.

I always have been intimidated a little bit when I faced Serena, She’s an inspiration for everyone and the model for everyone”. 

“It was my Mum’s dream for me. She said if I wanted to do something in tennis I have to play the final of Wimbledon, so today the day came.”

It was my mum’s dream when I was about 10. And the day came and my mum is here to see it. I have worked a lot to change a little bit my game to play on grass. I started to feel this year when the ball comes to me I knew what to do with it. I can’t wait to come back here.

For Serena, it was her 3rd grand slam defeat in the last 12 months. Williams looked rusty as she always tried to make a comeback into the game. 

#4 “Fedal” Rivalry Came to the Fore yet Again but Ended in the Semi-Final
federer vs nadalThe most anticipated “Fedal” rivalry saw Roger Federer beat Rafael Nadal in the 2019 Wimbledon semi-final. It was the most awaited match of the tournament as they finally met in the center court. Federer pulled off some brilliant service games and unsettled Nadal to take control of the match. Federer, who plays like a dream, was in an aggressive charge of his game.

The buzz of “Fedal” was incredible as the crowd chanted both of their names with each point scored. 

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were going neck and neck in the first set and produced some of the best tennis shots one could ever dream of.  

David Beckham, Hugh Grant, Jude Law, Leona Lewis, Damian Lewis and Bear Grylls were among those in attendance for the semi-final match at the All England Club, while other celebrities, sports stars and tennis players reacted to the action via social media. Tweets followed with the hashtag #Fedal40 with all the people reacting that the match lived upto the hype of the audience.

#5 Boy Reading Book during Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal Final goes Viral
During the most anticipated match of the tournament between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, picture of a boy reading the book with full concentration in the stadium during the match went viral. Twitteratis came up with hilarious tweets on the following incident. 

Soon the boy became the internet sensation as his picture on social media started doing rounds. It was a gripping semi-final but despite that, it failed to grab the attention of the kid who was caught nonchalantly reading the book. The funniest part of it was that even the most awaited rivalry game failed to grab his attention. 

At the end, it was Federer who turned out to be the winner of the match. He beat the Spaniard to book his place in the finals against Novak Djokovic.
