A guy, who has always played his career with Tennis ball, Navdeep Saini was over the moon when he was selected in Delhi’s Ranji side, thanks to the large-hearted Gautam Gambhir’s efforts. Sometimes, you just need one person to change your fortunes and in Navdeep Saini inspiring tale, it was none other than Gautam Gambhir.
A guy who has never bowled in the nets with a leather ball, it wasn’t easy for Navdeep to calm his nerves. Gautam Gambhir, who was present in the camp at that time, made sure the former stay composed and asked him to bowl to him.
Gambhir asked the then 21-year old to bowl the way he bowls with the tennis ball and things will fall in place. Navdeep, apparently, hit on good lengths and did trouble Gambhir with his pace and accuracy. Impressed with his fast-bowling, Gambhir without giving a second thought in his mind, asked Delhi team selectors to draft him in the squad.
Considering the fact that Navdeep wasn’t from Delhi, DDCA members weren’t in favour of drafting former in the Delhi side. However, after a lot of altercations between Gambhir and DDCA members, the former eventually succeeded as Navdeep Saini played his Ranji title for Delhi in 2013 against Bengal.

Navdeep Saini Early Day's
Hailing from Karnal, Haryana, Navdeep Saini was born on 23rd November 1992. His father, Amarjeet Singh Saini, was employed with the Haryana Government, as a bus driver, while his grandfather, Karam Singh, was a member of Subhash Chandra Bose’ Indian National Army.
Navdeep comes from a family of small means. The tall fast bowler started playing career when he was only six years old. Considering the fact that his family didn’t have the money to afford the fees for the cricket academy, he has played with a tennis ball.
Growing up, he loved bowling fast. 5’10, Navdeep would wreak havoc in tennis ball tournament. His father wanted him to make an engineer, but Navdeep had other ideas. Like all other kids who loved playing cricket in their childhood days, Navdeep would bunk classes to play cricket.
Knowing that he didn’t have any contact and money needed to pursue the game, Navdeep kept playing in a tennis ball tournament and didn’t think otherwise. He would go to play all the tennis ball tournaments that were happening in the state and would also earn between Rs. 200 and Rs. 300 as rewards.
Turning Point in Career
Growing up, Navdeep Saini underwent a lot of financial stress as the Indian fast bowler couldn’t even afford a pair of shoes for himself to play cricket. But he made sure he would save all the money he makes through a tennis ball tournament.
Navdeep used all that money to draft himself in Karnal Premier League, organized by Sumit Narwal.
Narwal took a glimpse of him and was impressed by his fierce pace and accuracy. Seeing his potential, he took him to Delhi in a bid to unleash his talent under the watchful eyes of senior members.
Navdeep Saini Domestic Career
In the 2013-14 Ranji season, Navdeep Saini made his debut first-class appearance against Vidarbha on December 14. He claimed two wickets in the game, giving away 18 runs.
He played only two matches that season, the other being against Punjab where he took three wickets.
He came up with better numbers in 2014-15 season, exhibiting his class while picking his first seven-wicket haul against Rajasthan. Saini ended his season with 16 wickets in 5 matches at an average of 15.50.
2017-18 season saw him becoming the highest wicket-taker for Delhi. He claimed 34 wickets in eight matches. His performance helped him getting a place in India A side that toured South Africa.
“Playing for India A for the first time, there was pressure. But, then I was alright. Before going to South Africa, Yuvraj Paaji was there, so he told us about the conditions there and the lengths to hit. He asked me to practice bowling those lengths before going there because I wouldn’t get any time to adjust to it. The camp was very useful,” he told cric info.

Navdeep Saini International Career
Navdeep Saini was first included in India’s Test squad for their one-off match against Afghanistan. However, he did not get to play any game. Navdeep Saini’s Test is yet to play his first international Test match.
Navdeep Saini was also included as a stand-boy bowler in India’s 2019 World Cup squad.
Navdeep Saini played his debut international T20 game against West Indies in 2019. He claimed three wickets in his quota of four overs, which included two wickets in two consecutive deliveries. His impressive performance in his debut game helped him fetch the man of the match performance.

In what was the tenth edition of IPL, Navdeep Saini was bought by Delhi Capitals but couldn’t get tp play a game. In 2018, RCB snapped the fast bowler for a whopping price of 3 crores. Navdeep didn’t get to play a game but was retained for the next year.
Saini finally made his debut in the Indian Premier League in 2019. Turning up for Royal Challengers Bangalore, he played 13 matches, picking up 11 wickets at an average of 36.09.
