Lowest Scores by RCB

Although Royal Challengers Bangalore have put together some of the most fearsome batting units in IPL history and delivered some amazing performances with the bat, they’re capable of a few spectacular collapses as well!

Here’s a look back at the times when their famed batting lineups didn’t click, compiled in this list of Lowest Team Total by RCB in IPL matches.

Top 5 Lowest Scores by RCB in IPL

#5. 87 v Chennai Super Kings (2009)

rcb vs csk

The entry at number five on this list of Lowest Team Total by RCB in IPL history comes from the tournament’s second season when it was being played in South Africa. Chennai Super Kings were RCB’s opponents in the all-South affair and the men in yellow won the toss and batted first. A blistering 65 from Matthew Hayden set the tone for the innings as CSK finished on 179/5 in their 20 overs.

The pre-Gayle and pre-de Villiers RCB decided to send Praveen Kumar in to open, a decision that backfired right from the start and didn’t allow the team to build up any momentum. Every CSK bowler was among the wickets, with spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan spinning a web around the RCB batsmen, finishing with 3/11 in four overs and sending RCB crashing to a 92-run loss.

Rcb Batting kkr vs rcb

Fourth among Lowest Scores by RCB in IPL history was their dismal batting performance in the first-ever IPL match itself. RCB were blown away in the first innings by a blistering 158* from Brendon McCullum, who hit 10 fours and 13 sixes and took KKR to a mammoth 222/3. Bangalore’s chase never got off the ground, as they lost regular wickets to eventually fold up for 82 in 15.1 overs. Every KKR bowler took at least one wicket, with Ajit Agarkar being the destroyer-in-chief with 3/25 off his four overs.

#3. 70 v Chennai Super Kings (2019)

csk vs rcb

Chennai Super Kings make yet another appearance in this list of Lowest Team Total by RCB in IPL history, and this one happened in the most recent edition of the tournament. It was the first match of the 2019 edition, and CSK put RCB in to bat after winning the toss. The three-pronged spin attack of Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir, and Ravindra Jadeja took over from there on in, picking up eight of the 10 wickets to fall as RCB folded up for just 70 in 17.1 overs. Even though they put on a decent bowling display in the second innings and took the game into the 18th over, RCB never had enough runs on the board and CSK ground out a seven-wicket win.

#2. 70 v Rajasthan Royals (2014)

RR vs RCB

Next on this list of RCB’s 5 lowest scores in IPL history is a near-repeat of the previous entry. Not even Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Yuvraj Singh could keep RCB from collapsing to 70 all out in 15 overs against Rajasthan Royals in this group stage game in Abu Dhabi in 2014. Put in to bat first by the Royals, RCB never had an answer to Pravin Tambe’s leg-spin as the veteran bowler tore through the middle order to finish with figures of 4/20. The target of 71 proved to be too little for the RCB bowlers to defend, as the Royals batsmen took their time and reached 71 in 13 overs to seal a 6-wicket win.

#1. 49 v Kolkata Knight Riders (2017)

rcb vs kkr

The team that has posted the IPL’s highest-ever total also holds the dubious distinction of being bundled out for the lowest ever total too – this match against KKR in Kolkata in 2017 is not RCB’s finest hour. The match started off well for Kohli’s men too – having won the toss and put KKR in to bat, a fine bowling effort bowled KKR out for just 131 in 19.3 overs.

However, the pace attack of Chris Woakes, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Umesh Yadav, and Colin de Grandhomme tore through the Bangalore batting lineup, skittling them out for just 49 in under 10 overs! Coulter-Nile, Woakes, and de Grandhomme all picked up 3 wickets apiece while Yadav snapped up the remaining wicket to seal a historic win for KKR.
