EARLY LIFE

Indian professional Tennis player, Sania Mirza was born in the state of Mumbai in 1986. Her father, Imran Mirza, worked as a sports journalist, while her mother, Naseema worked in a printing business.

Sania’s family soon shifted to Hyderabad where she took up the sport of Tennis. She started playing tennis at the age of six. In the initial years of her career, she was trained under the guidance of her father.

Sania Mirza completed her education from Nasr School in Hyderabad, while she pursued her graduation from St. Mary’s College. Sania also received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the MGR Educational and Research Institute University in Chennai on 11 December 2008.

It has been understood that before getting married to Shoaib Malik, Sania got engaged to her childhood friend Sohrab Mirza but later the marriage was called off.

Shoaib Malik tied the knots with Sania Mirza in a traditional Hyderabadi Muslim wedding ceremony at the Taj Krishna Hotel in Hyderabad on 12 April 2010, while the Walima ceremony was held in Sialkot, Pakistan. In October 2018, the couple was blessed with a baby boy, naming him Mirza Malik.

Sania Mirza enjoyed a phenomenal run in her singles career, registering notable wins against Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva and Marion Bartoli, Martina Hingis, Dinara Safina, and Victoria Azarenka. Stellar performances in International circuit saw her reaching 27th position in the world ranking.

However, a wrist injury forced her to give up on her singles career and focused only on doubles tournaments.

She enjoyed a great-run in doubles in the company of Martina Hingis. The duo enjoyed the maximum success in 2015 and 2016, winning three doubles slams and 2 WTA Finals titles.

She has won three doubles grand slam titles, including one Australian Open and a Wimbledon and US Open each.  

She also has three mixed doubles grand slam wins, namely, Australian Open (2016), French Open (2012), and US Open (2014).

In August 2016, the winning combination of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis decided to split as a team owing to consistent failures on the court. The pair last played together in 2016 WTA Finals in Singapore.

Sania joined hands with Barbora Strycova in late 2016, winning two titles. The year 2017 saw her falling out from the top five positions, owing to her struggle to find committed partners.

Sania was last seen in China Open, where she played alongside Peng Shuai. The duo showed exceptional performances before losing out in the semi-finals.

In April 2018 Sania announced she’s pregnant, expecting her first child with Shoaib Malik. Later, she assured her fans that she has no plans to retire and will make a return to professional tennis in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Early in the career, Sania was heavily criticized by a Muslim religious community for wearing short skirts while playing Tennis, reasoning that Islam does not allow women to wear such attire. However, later Jamiat-ulema-e-Hind rejected all such rumors about saying that they didn’t stop anyone from playing.

Sania was supposed to marry her childhood friend Mohammed Sohrab Mirza, however, the marriage was called off citing compatibility reasons.

“We were friends for half a decade but found ourselves incompatible during our engagement period. I wish Sohrab the best in life,” Sania said post the annulling of the relationship.
