Rajasthan Royals have been one of the initial eight IPL franchises that have participated in the tournament since 2008. Based in Jaipur, the team were the inaugural champions of the Indian Premier League in 2008 and has since then participated in 10 editions sans 2016 and 2017 wherein they were banned due to match-fixing allegations.

Last year, the team was led by Steve Smith but disappointed everyone after finishing seventh with 11 points from 14 matches. They only bettered eight-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore who also had the same points but inferior net run rate.

1. 223 for 5 against Chennai Super Kings (IPL 2010)

In the 32nd match of the 2010 IPL, Rajasthan Royals travelled to Chennai to play against the eventual champions. Super Kings won the toss and opted to bat first. Courtesy of Murali Vijay’s 127 runs knock and Albie Morkel’s 62, Chennai posted a monstrous total of 246 runs after losing five wickets.

In reply, Rajasthan started strong as their openers Michael Lumb and Naman Ojha stitched on a 69-run partnership. After Lumb’s dismissal, Shane Watson went on a 25 ball 60 runs carnage and ably supported Naman Ojha who remained unbeaten on 94 from 55 balls,

The duo’s effort, however, went in vain as Rajasthan went on to muster 223/5 in 20 overs to lose the match by 23 runs.

2. 217 for 7 against Deccan Chargers (IPL 2008)

Highest Team Total by RR: One of the most exciting matches that IPL has ever witnessed, Royals travelled to Hyderabad to take on now-defunct Deccan Chargers in the ninth match of the 2008 edition. Having won the toss, Royals skipper Shane Warne opted to bowl first.

Although Deccan Chargers lost both of their openers for cheap, it was Andrew Symonds’ 117-run knock in 53 deliveries that propelled the host’s total to 214/5 in 20 overs. In reply, Royals lost their Pakistani opener Kamran Akmal for cheap, however, a 98-run partnership between Graeme Smith and Yusuf Pathan ensured Rajasthan remained in the fray to win the match.

While Smith scored 45 balls 71, Pathan struck 61 runs in 28 balls. Along with the duo’s contribution, Mohammad Kaif’s quickfire 16 balls 34 and Shane Warne’s 9 balls 22 helped the Royals chase down the total with 1 ball remaining.

3. 217 for 4 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (IPL 2018)

The 11th match of the 2018 season saw Royal Challengers Bangalore host Rajasthan Royals. RCB skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field first. Royals started strong as their skipper Ajinkya Rahane and his fellow opener D’Arcy Short stitched on a 49-run partnership for the first wicket.

Then walked in a certain Sanju Samson who courtesy of his 10 sixes and 2 boundaries struck a 45 ball unbeaten 92 to help his side post a gigantic total of 217 runs for the loss of four wickets.

In reply, despite Virat Kohli’s half-century and Mandeep Singh 25 ball 47, RCB fell short by 19 runs, thus handing Royals the win.

4. 211 for 5 against Chennai Super Kings (IPL 2008)

Highest Team Total by RR: Another high scoring thriller between the two teams, Rajasthan travelled to Chennai to play the 49th match of the season in the inaugural edition of the IPL. The visiting team won the toss and elected to bat first. Riding on Royals’ top-three, the visitors posted a huge total of 211 for the loss of five wickets. Graeme Smith top-scored in the innings with a 51-ball 91 and was ably supported by Swapnil Asnodkar (41) and Kamran Akmal (53).

In reply, Chennai almost managed to win the match with a well-made 54 from Parthiv Patel along with a 24 ball 45 runs blitzkrieg by Suresh Raina and 40 balls 71 by Albie Morkel. Despite all of this, Royals managed to win the match by 10 runs and eventually won the tournament in the final against this very same team.

5. 211 for 4 against Kings XI Punjab (IPL 2009)

In a one-sided affair, Royals thrashed Kings XI Punjab when the two sides played each other at Durban in the 2009 edition. Being asked to bat first after losing the toss, Rajasthan’s openers Naman Ojha (68) and Graeme Smith (77) stitched a 135-run partnership to power Royals to 211 for the loss of 4 wickets. The innings will also be remembered for the arrival of Ravindra Jadeja in the premier stage, as he blasted a 12 ball 33 in this match.

In reply, Punjab managed to muster just 133 runs, thus losing the contest by 78 runs. Although Yuvraj Singh scored 48 runs, nobody other than him looked in touch as the Mohali based team was thumped by the defending champions.
