Highest Scores by RCB in IPL

Although Royal Challengers Bangalore has been criticised in the past for their top-heavy batting lineup that is often let down by a bowling unit that cannot match up in terms of quality, the team from Bangalore have at least treated cricket fans to some memorable batting displays.

Let’s relive the best of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and the like by taking a look back at Highest Team Total by RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) in IPL history.

#5. 226/3 v Kings XI Punjab (2015)

KXIP VS RCB Match Summary

Kicking off this list of Highest Team Total by RCB in IPL history is their mammoth effort against Kings XI Punjab on their home ground in 2015. This was one of those innings that bowlers drear, simply because Chris Gayle got his eye in and settled in for a long stay at the crease. Gayle opened the batting with Kohli after having been put in to bat and seemed to be in fine nick right from ball one. RCB were well past 100 when the first wicket fell, with Kohli contributing just 32.

A bowling attack featuring Mitchell Johnson, Sandeep Sharma, and Axar Patel among others couldn’t keep Gayle in check, as the big West Indian raced to a 46-ball 100, eventually falling for 117 with seven fours and 12 massive sixes! There was no respite for the bowlers even after dismissing Kohli, as AB de Villiers was next in to bat and he continued the carnage. Useful contributions down the order carried the score to 226, which proved to be a step too far for Kings XI. The left-arm pace battery of Mitchell Starc and Sreenath Aravind took four wickets each as Kings XI folded for just 88 in 13.4 overs, handing Bangalore a 138-run win.

#4. 227/4 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (2016)

rcb vs srh

Number four on this list of Highest Scores by RCB in IPL matches is a closer affair than the previous entry but is still a case of Kohli and co. simply out-batting the opposition. Sunrisers Hyderabad were the opposition this time, and they would have thought that they had gotten off to a great start as Gayle was sent back to the pavilion in just the second over!

However, this was one of many great partnerships that Virat Kohli has shared with AB de Villiers in IPL matches over the years, with the two putting on a 157-run stand for the second wicket. While Kohli finished on 75 off 51 balls, AB was in a much more murderous mood, scoring 82 off just 42 deliveries. A late cameo from Sarfaraz Khan took RCB to 227/4 in their 20 overs. SRH had a good go at chasing down their huge target, with David Warner scoring 58 and Eoin Morgan and Ashish Reddy contributing down the order. However, the rest of the batsmen failed to rise to the occasion and SRH eventually fell 45 runs short.

#3. 235/1 v Mumbai Indians (2015)

rcb vs mi

Third on this list of Highest Team Total by RCB in IPL history is one of the IPL’s truly memorable matches, for all sorts of reasons. If the total of 235 wasn’t enough, the fact that Bangalore got there for the loss of just one wicket shows what kind of form their batsmen were in on the day. This was yet another edition of the Kohli-de Villiers show, with the South African being the star performer. After Gayle had been dismissed cheaply, RCB’s dynamic duo got together and wreaked havoc on the hapless Mumbai Indians bowlers, with just Lasith Malinga finishing with an economy rate in single figures.

The Indian captain finished on 82 off 50 balls, but it was AB de Villiers who was the real match-winner, scoring a superb 133 off just 59 balls, decorated with 19 fours and four sixes! Mumbai Indians did make a good fist of the chase, reaching 196/7 in their 20 overs, but when Kohli and ABD catch fire, there aren’t many batsmen who can keep pace!

#2. 248/3 v Gujarat Lions (2016)

rcb vs gl

Gujarat Lions didn’t have a long stint in the IPL, but they did manage to feature in some great matches during their time in the tournament. However, this is one they would like to forget, as they crashed to a 144-run defeat thanks to an imperious RCB batting display. This was yet another instance which proved that even if you get rid of Gayle early, you weren’t safe because you still have Kohli and AB to contend with! Bangalore’s dream duo came together in the fourth over and proceeded to score matching tons, smashing the Lions’ bowling attack to all parts.

While Kohli scored 109 off 55 balls with five fours and eight sixes, de Villiers was once again the aggressor with 129 off 52 balls, hitting 10 fours and 12 maximums. In reply, the Lions never really got their chase started and were cleaned up for 104, with Chris Jordan taking 4/11, Yuzvendra Chahal taking 3/19, and even Sachin Baby bagging two wickets in one over!

#1. 263/5 v Pune Warriors (2013)

rcb vs pwi

The top two in Highest Scores by Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL history also happen to be the two highest scores for any team across the tournament, a testament to the phenomenal batting displays they have put on over the years! This one comes from 2013 when a star-studded RCB batting lineup tore the Pune Warriors apart in Bangalore.

Actually, it was a one-man wrecking crew in the form of Chris Gayle, who scored 175* in a brutal display of power hitting that no one has ever come close to replicating. No other RCB batsman got past 35 as Gayle smashed 13 fours and 17 sixes, breaking all sorts of records along the way. Having posted the highest team total and the highest individual score in IPL history, the RCB bowling attack then got into the act, restricting a Pune Warriors batting lineup (which had the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Steve Smith, Robin Uthappa, and Aaron Finch in their ranks) to just 133/9 on their way to a 130-run win.
