CSK Highest Run Scores In IPL

Chennai Super Kings have prided themselves on fielding a quite settled lineup in IPL tournaments over the years, and a power-packed batting lineup has always been part of their plans. At the beginning, it was the likes of Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden who were counted on to provide fast starts. In the later years, Brendon McCullum, Dwayne Smith, Shane Watson, and Faf du Plessis have carried on that role.

The Indian batting contingent has been just as formidable all this while, with Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, and MS Dhoni scoring big runs for the franchise over the years. With such stalwarts in their ranks, Chennai Super Kings have put on some batting masterclasses over the years, so let’s take a look back at CSK highest totals in IPL history.

Top 5 CSK Highest Run Scores in IPL

#5. 211/4 vs Delhi Daredevils (2018)

Delhi Daredevils

The fifth entry on this list of CSK’s 5 highest scores in IPL history is the most recent one, and it comes from the 2018 edition of the tournament. This was the comeback season for the MS Dhoni-led former champions as they were returning from a two-year suspension, and the team was playing like they were making up for lost time. Delhi Daredevils were the unlucky team on the receiving end of one of their onslaughts, getting smashed for 211 in the first innings during a group stage match. Shane Watson scored a quick half-century to get the team off to a flyer, while Ambati Rayudu and MSD added the fireworks at the end of the innings to take their total past 200. In reply, the franchise from the capital put together a spirited effort but eventually fell short by 13 runs.

#4. 222/5 vs Delhi Daredevils (2012)

Delhi Daredevils

The unlucky Delhi Daredevils make another appearance on this list of CSK’s 5 CSK highest totals in IPL history, this time in the second qualifier of the playoffs in the 2012 edition of the tournament. Boasting the likes of Virender Sehwag, David Warner, Mahela Jayawardene, Ross Taylor, and Andre Russell in their lineup the Daredevils had been the table-toppers in the group stage and had looked likely to make the final – until they came up against Murali Vijay. The Tamil Nadu batsman had not been having the best of tournaments but scored a scintillating century when it counted. The rest of the CSK lineup chipped in with useful 20s and 30s but Vijay was the real star, propelling his team to 222/5 in their 20 overs. Despite their star-studded lineup, the pressure proved too much for the Daredevils as they fell well short of CSK’s substantial total.

The Chennai Super Kings batsmen were in top form in the 2013 edition of the IPL and a huge score was widely expected by all who watched their games. Dhoni and Co. did not disappoint, with Sunrisers Hyderabad being the unfortunate side at the receiving end at their own home ground. Having lost Murali Vijay early, it was the left-handed duo of Michael Hussey and Suresh Raina who did the bulk of the scoring, adding 133 for the second wicket before Hussey departed for 67. Raina continued on his merry way, falling one short of what would have been a fantastic century, taking CSK to 223 in the process. It was too much for SRH right from the word go, and they could only muster 146 in reply.

Matthew Hayden, Suresh Raina, and Subramaniam Badrinath also made useful contributions to take CSK to 240/5 in the first innings. Murali Vijay makes another appearance in CSK’s 5 highest scores in IPL history with yet another swashbuckling century for the men in yellow. Batting first, Vijay set the tone for the innings from the first ball, ably supported by Matthew Hayden. Even Hayden’s dismissal did not faze Vijay as he hit eight fours and 11 sixes on his way to 127 off just 56 balls! Albie Morkel contributed a quick 50 at the end as CSK ended up on 246, which is a decent ODI score! The excitement continued till the last ball of the match, however, as the Royals made a good fist of the chase and managed to score 223 themselves!
