Shakhtar Donetsk also known as The Moles is the Ukrainian Football Club. They participate in UPL, Ukrainian Cup and Ukrainian Super Cup.

HISTORY

The club was founded 83 years ago on 24th May 1936 as Stakhanovets. They registered their 1st victory in the early sixties after which renamed themselves as Shakhtar.

They won the Soviet Cup two years later in a row, 1961 and 1962. But have to wait two decades for two more Soviet Cups in 1980 and 1983.

During the first half of the nineties when Ukraine was beginning a new era of independence, the club was struggling in the newly established Ukrainian Premier League.

The club dip into sudden dramatic events when then-president Akhat Bragin was brutally assassinated in a bomb explosion during a Championship game. The club was facing a black phase back then.

After the entry of Rinat Akhmetov, the new man in charge leads the club to lead them to unprecedented glory. Under his leadership the club won the national championship as well as the 2009 UEFA Cup thus became the second Ukraine team to win an international title.

Club Ownership

The Club is under the ownership of Rinat Akhmetov who took the club after the mysterious October 1995 bombing assassination of former team president Akhat Bragin at the team’s stadium.

The Metalist Stadium serves the club as their home ground. Located in Kharkiv, Ukraine the stadium has a net capacity to hold 40,003 spectators.

The current net worth of the club is 137.40 Million Euros.
