Archer Deepika Kumari was born in India on June 13, of the year 1994. Deepika Kumari competes in the sport of archery and is presently rated No. 2 in the world.

Early Life

Shiv Charan Prajapati, an auto-rickshaw driver, and Geeta, a nurse at Ranchi Medical College and a native of Ratu Chatti village, 15 Kilometers outside of Ranchi, Jharkhand, were the parents of Deepika Kumari, who was born in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Her family belongs to the Prajapatis.

Deepika Kumari practised archery as a child, using stones to aim for mangoes. Early on, Deepika’s parents struggled to financially support her desire, frequently compromising on household expenses to buy her new training tools. As a result, Deepika practised archery with handcrafted bamboo bows and arrows. She was assisted in honing her talent by Deepika’s cousin Vidya Kumari, a resident archer at the Tata Archery Academy at the time.

Archery Career

When Deepika enrolled in the Arjun Archery Academy at Kharsawan in the year 2005, the institute was founded by Meera Munda, the wife of Jharkhand’s chief minister Arjun Munda. However, she began her career as a professional archer in the year 2006 when she enrolled in Jamshedpur’s Tata Archery Academy. She began her training at this location with the necessary tools and a uniform. Deepika Kumari also gets a stipend of Rs 500. In her first three years there, Deepika only made one trip back home, and that was right after she had won the Cadet World Championship in the month of November of the year 2009. It has long been believed that Kumari will be the one to bring India its first archery medal.

In the women’s individual recurve competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Deepika Kumari took home a gold medal. Along with Dola Banerjee and Bombayala Devi, Deepika Kumari also took home a gold medal in the women’s team recurve category at the same event. Deepika Kumari has achieved individual gold in two of the three World Cup stages—one in Paris and one in Guatemala. In the process, she regained the top spot in the Paris World Cup rankings after nine years. Individual gold medals for the country were won by Deepika Kumari at Stage 1 of the Archery World Cup. In the final, Deepika Kumari triumphed over Mexico 5-1 to win gold in Paris.

Kumari won a spot in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, where she took part in the Women’s Team and Individual competitions, placing eighth in the latter.

In the year 2012, Deepika Kumari received the Arjuna Award, the second-highest athletic honour in India, from Pranab Mukherjee, the country’s president. Deepika received the FICCI Sportsperson of the Year Award in the month of February of the year 2014. In the year 2016, the Indian government presented her with the Padma Shri, a civil honour.

On 30 June 2020, Deepika Kumari got married to the famous Archer Atanu Das.

Achievements

Deepika Kumari, an Indian archer, has won numerous medals in the sport. She won the junior compound competition at the 2006 Archery World Cup in Mexico and the 11th Youth World Archery Championship in the year 2009 at the age of fifteen. In the year 2010, Deepika won two gold medals at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, including one in the individual event and one in the women’s team recurve event. In the year 2012, Deepika won her first World Cup individual stage recurve gold medal at Antalya, Turkey, and later became world no. 1 in Women’s Recurve Archery.

In the year 2015, Deepika won a bronze medal at the second stage of the World Cup, and in the latter half of the year, she won a silver medal in the World Cup final. In the year 2016, she equalled Ki Bo-bae’s world record in the women’s recurve event.

Deepika was part of the Indian women’s recursive team that qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Deepika Kumari won three gold medals in the Archery’s World Cup Stage 3 tournament in Paris 2021, becoming the 11th archer to achieve the feat in the 15-year history of the Hyundai Archery World Cup.
