Riyad Mahrez is a Footballer who plays as a winger for the Premier League club, Manchester City and captains the Algerian national team.

EARLY LIFE

Riyad was born on 21st February 1991 in Sarcelles France to mixed Algerian/Moroccan mother, Halima Mahrez and father Ahmed mahrez.

Riyad grew up among violence, drug dealing, chronic unemployment and the immigrant community. In such circumstances, it was Riyad’s father Ahmed who sparked his son’s love of the game Football.

PERSONAL LIFE

Riyad married his long-time girlfriend Rita Johal in 2015. The couple is blessed with two children.

CLUB CAREER

Riyad started his Football career with AAS Sarcelles in 2004 before joining the CFA side Quimper where he made 22 appearances in which he netted two goals during his debut season.

IN 2010 he left the club to join the Le Havre rejecting offers from PSG and Marseille. Within the club, he gradually grew from the reserve team.

Playing for the senior side of the club he appeared in 60 matches in which he netted six goals in the French Ligue 2.

On 11th January 2014, he signed a three and a half year contract. He made his debut on 25th January 2014, coming on in the 79th minute as a substitute in a 2-0 win against Middlesbrough.

He signed a fresh four-year contract with Leicester City in August 2015. In the same year, he helps to conquer the 2015-16 Premier League. In 2016 he was nominated for the Ballon d’Or finishing seventh in the list.

He won the BBC African Footballer of the Year award in December 2016. He helped the club to arrive in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time, scoring four goals and two assists. On 6th May he played his 100th Premier League game for Leicester against Watford, scoring in the process.

On 10th July 2018, he joined Manchester City for a five-year contract on a transfer fee of 60 million euros making him the most expensive African footballer.

He made his debut on 5th August 2018 in a match defeating Chelsea by 2-0 to win the 2018 FA Community shield. Playing for the City Riyad helped the club to conquer the 2018-19 Premier Club, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

In 2019-20 season Riyad started with their 5-0 win against West Ham United, in which he assisted two goals for Raheem Sterling.

 

INTERNATIONAL CAREER

Riyad’s journey in the Algerian national team begins in November 2013. He was called up to the provisional Algeria squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

On 31st May 2014, he made his international debut for his national team in a friendly match against Armenia. His first international goal came on 15th October 2014.

Riyad gradually over the passing years showed outstanding performances for his national team due to which he was assigned as the caption of the team. Under his leadership and guidance, the team won the 2019 African Cup of Nations.

CONTROVERSY

In 2018 Riyad’s behavior was criticized a lot by the commentator and former player Chris Sutton after he wished to leave Leicester City. The behavior of his was seen after his move to Manchester City fell through.
