Brandon Fernandes, an attacking midfielder for the Indian Super League football club Goa, which he captained, and the India national team, was born in India on September 20, of the year 1994.

Early Football Career

Brandon Fernandes, born in Margao, Goa, started playing competitive football at six years old. Brandon played for the youth set-up at Fransa-Pax, Velsao Pale Sports Club, Goa United Football Academy, Salgaocar, and India under-20. After impressing with Salgaocar and the India under-20 side, Brandon was enrolled in the ASD Football Academy in Cape Town, South Africa. Despite being trialed by three English clubs, Brandon Fernandes could not secure a contract. Fernandes also played for the ASD Cape Town team in the SAFA Second Division, scoring 12 goals from 12 matches.

Before playing in the Lusophony Games in the year 2014, Fernandes was supposed to go on trial with AS Monaco but the trials never occurred. After impressing Goa during the Lusophony Games, Brandon Fernandes rejected offers from seven I-League clubs and chose to wait for an offer from a European football club.

Football Club Career

In the year 2015, Brandon Fernandes returned to India after his contract with ASD Cape Town expired and decided not to play in the I-League. Brandon Fernandes made his professional football debut for Sporting Goa on 8 February of the year 2015, starting 23 minutes before being substituted off due to an injury. Brandon Fernandes scored his first senior professional goal against Salgaocar on 19 April of the year 2015, helping Sporting Goa win 2–0.

Fernandes also scored a man-of-the-match performance over Bharat on 2 May of the year 2015, pressuring the Bharat defense throughout his 88 minutes on the pitch. Brandon Fernandes assisted Sandesh Jhingan in the final round of the season, confirming his team’s status in the top flight for the next I-League season.

Brandon was picked up in the 2015 Indian Super League draft by the football club Mumbai City during the first round for Rs. 12 lakhs. Brandon Fernandes missed the first 7 rounds of the season due to injury and made his football debut against the football club Delhi Dynamos in round 8. On his first start for the football club Mumbai City, Brandon was injured and ruled out of the season.

On 6 January of the year 2016, Brandon signed for reigning I-League champions Mohun Bagan on loan from the football club Mumbai City. Brandon Fernandes made his debut on 30 January of the year 2016 against the football club of DSK Shivajians and scored his first goal for the club a month later on 1 March against Sporting Goa. However, Brandon Fernandes had to be taken off the pitch four minutes later due to a knee injury.

Brandon Fernandes signed for the newly re-instated I-League football club Churchill Brothers for the 2016-17 I-League season. Brandon Fernandes appeared 15 times in the league for Churchill, scoring 3 goals and finishing as the highest provider of assists with 7 assists. His high point of the season was the game against the football club Chennai City, where Brandon Fernandes assisted 4 times and scored once in a 6–1 win for his team.

Brandon Fernandes was drafted in by Goa football club for the 2017–18 Indian Super League season at a cost of ₹2,750,000. Brandon Fernandes played 15 times for his club provided 4 assists during the season, and scored twice in the Super Cup as Goa was eliminated by the football club East Bengal in the cup competition.

In the 2019–20 season, Brandon continued with Goa, primarily on the left side of midfield as Hugo Boumous moved to the attacking midfielder role. Brandon Fernandes scored twice and assisted 7 times in 17 appearances, finishing as the highest-assisting Indian player in the league once again.

On 10 April of the year 2021, Fernandes signed a new three-year contract with the football club Goa, keeping him at the club until the year 2024.

International Football Career

In the year 2007, while representing Velsao Pale, Fernandes was chosen to play for the U14 football team of India in the AFC U-14 Football Festival. The U17 football team of India Fernandes later captained won the Coca-Cola Celebration Cup in the year 2010. Fernandes also scored against the football team of Turkmenistan on October 31, of the year 2011, in his debut game for the India U20 team as part of the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship qualifiers.

The best midfielder in India, in the opinion of many, is Brandon. Except for the senior squad, Brandon Fernandes has represented the football team of India at every level of play. Many supporters criticized the coach’s selection of players for the AFC Asian Cup 2019 who had been performing well for the previous two to three seasons, such as Brandon Fernandez, Rahul Bheke, Sosairaj, Mandar, and Adil.

During the 2014 Lusophony Games, Fernandes represented his home state of Goa. Brandon Fernandes participated in the tournament’s championship match as Goa defeated Mozambique’s under-20 squad to win the Lusophony Games. Brandon Fernandes provided two assists and one penalty kick goal. During the Lusophony games, Brandon participated four times and scored three goals in the respected football matches.
