PV Sindhu, HS Prannoy To Lead Indian Team At Sudirman Cup 2023

The Indian team will be headed by HS Prannoy and two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu in the 2023 Sudirman Cup, which will be held in Suzhou, China, from May 14–21. The senior national selection committee assembled a “balanced” team on Tuesday with the goal of winning the nation’s first-ever medal in the mixed team championships.

The Indian men made history by winning the coveted Thomas Cup the previous year, and after taking bronze in the Asian Mixed Team Championships earlier this year, expectations for a potential podium finish were further boosted.

The selectors chose the best team for the coveted Sudirman Cup after considering domestic and international results. We are certain that this squad will contend for a medal this year,” said Sanjay Mishra, secretary of the Badminton Association of India.

India has been placed in Group C with Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, and Australia. Their first challenge will be to advance from a potentially tricky group to the knockout stage.

The men’s doubles team will be strengthened by the return of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who was injured and missed the Asian mixed team competition. Ashwini Ponnappa and her new partner Tanisha Castro will support All England semifinalist Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly.

The two singles players on the team will be Kidambi Srikanth and Anupama Upadhyaya, the current senior national women’s singles champion.
