‘It’s Indian Premier League and we have only one Indian coach’: Anil Kumble

The Indian Premier League is all set to start from 19th September 2020. Recently, BCCI announced the official schedule of the tournament. According to the schedule, Chennai Super Kings will play against Mumbai Indians in the opening match.

A lot of overseas players and staff members participate in the Indian Premier League. However, it’s sad to understand that the tournament doesn’t involve a lot of Indian coaches. 2020 IPL will see only one Indian coach in the form of Anil Kumble, who has been at the helm of Kings Eleven Punjab this year.

All other franchises have roped in coaches from other countries despite having enough resources in the country. Head coach, Anil Kumble to finds it a bit ironical.

It is a bit of an irony – one Indian as head coach. I think at some point in time there will be a lot more Indian coaches.”  Kumble said

“I would like to see more Indian coaches in the IPL. It is not a true reflection of the Indian resources. I would want to see many Indians being part of the IPL as head coaches.” he added

The head coaches of other teams this year are Brendon McCullum (Kolkata Knight Riders), Ricky Ponting (Delhi Capitals), Mahela Jayawardene (Mumbai Indians), Stephen Fleming (Chennai Super Kings), Trevor Bayliss (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Andrew McDonald (Rajasthan Royals) and Simon Katich (Royal Challengers Bangalore).

KL RAHUL has been brilliant so far, very relaxed: Anil Kumble

KL Rahul Biography

Kumble also talked about Punjab’s new captain. Kumble opined that KL Rahul has enough experience of top-level cricket to handle the pressure of being a leader and hope that he does well in his debut assignment as skipper in IPL.

I have seen KL from a young age. He has captained in junior matches before but this will be the first time that he will be captaining in a high-profile tournament. He has been brilliant so far, very relaxed. He knows the players more than me. He has been with the team for two years now. He has been in the scene (top-level cricket) for 10 years now. He knows the nuances of what it takes to be as a leader,” said Kumble.
