IPL 2022: Longest Losing Streak of Chennai Super Kings

Chennai Super Kings’ lost in its five matches of IPL 2022 comprising its longest losing streak at the start of a season.

While this is CSK’s longest losing streak at the start of the tournament, it isn’t the first time the Men in Yellow have suffered five defeats this season. The last and only other time the Chennai Super Kings achieved this unenviable record was in IPL 2010 – co-incidentally that was also the year they went on to lift their maiden title.

Four-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had begun their IPL 2022 campaign with a horrifying start as they had lost their first four games of the season. This is the first time in IPL history that CSK has lost its first four games in a row. With four losses, the team is placed at the bottom of the IPL points table with an NRR of -1.211 after winning two matches now the team is placed second to last on the points table.

The defending champions lost to the Kolkata franchise by six wickets in their opening match. The Ravindra Jadeja-led side then lost to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by a similar margin in a high-scoring chase. Never before they had lost their first two matches of a season.

After their previous defeat against KL Rahul’s led side, where they couldn’t defend a massive 210-run total, the CSK head coach Stephen Fleming had put the blame on the excessive dew which was present on the pitch for taking their spinners out of the contest. Many CSK supporters and fans strongly believed that, if not for the dew, they would have easily beaten Lucknow supergiants.

The Chennai franchise suffered its third consecutive loss of the season as they went down in a one-sided encounter, losing to Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 54 runs.

Ahead of the tournament, MS Dhoni handed over the harness to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja to groom him for a future leadership role. However, Jadeja has looked mediocre as a captain, and often his decision-making skills on the field have not been successful so far.

Chennai’s 2nd heaviest defeat in the IPL was against the Punjab franchise. Chennai Super Kings suffered their third successive defeat in IPL 2022 after a batting collapse on a terrible night against Punjab Kings at Brabourne Stadium on Sunday.

“Didn’t get the start what we were looking for. 20-25 short. Our bowlers were looking to bowl in good areas early on, trying to take wickets. Will look to improve in both departments. We’re all professional cricketers, need to work hard on our game, stick together and try to come back”. Jadeja said this after their loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad on the 9th of April at DY Patil stadium.

The most expensive figures for CSK in IPL had to be 0/58 (3.5) C Jordan in CSK against the Gujarat titans.

For CSK, it is now not easy to make it into the playoffs. They have a mere 4.87% chance of reaching the playoffs.
