What are the 3 records that Lionel Messi has set after winning FIFA World Cup 2022

FIFA World Cup 2022 has come to a conclusion as Messi Argentina lifted the World title for the third time in their history by beating France in the Final by 4-2 on penalties. Lionel Messi after 7 Ballon D’ors, 10 La Liga and 4 UEFA Champions Leagues, has finally won the coveted World Cup trophy.

8 years since his first final at Brazil, Lionel Messi has finally it at the most exciting editions ever. This edition was truly a wild one and the most competitive ever. Since the start of the tournament there were some unexpected results on offer and the Final was a roller coaster as both teams went back and forth against each other.

Although France played really well and they were just a firm step away from retaining the title but Argentina’s victory seems as if it was written in the stars. Messi’s first world cup triumph did not come alone with that Golden trophy but the 35-year-old has set 3 records after the win last night at Lusail Stadium.

1. Lionel Messi is the first player to score in every knockout game of WC – 3-time World champion Pele and 2-time world champion Diego Maradona did not do what Messi did in this edition. He was always the main threat for any opposition but they way Lionel Scaloni used him was never seen before. The Iconic number 10 finished the World cup with 7 goals and 3 assists to his name. He opened the scoring for his side against Saudi Arabia in Argentina’s first match and went to score another against Mexico in the following Group stage fixture. Later in the knockout rounds, starting from the Round of 16 against Australia to the Final against France, Lionel Messi scored in every match. One against the Aussies (Last 16), 2 against Netherlands (Last 8), 1 against Croatia (Last 4) and 3 against France (Final). It actually means that the PSG forward has scored in every stage of the tournament.

2. Lionel Messi is the only player to win 2 Golden Ball awards – The heartbreak in 2014 Final against Germany meant that Messi would have to wait a bit more to land an International trophy. After the 2014 WC, Messi had to wait until 2021 to finally win the Copa America. Next year he won the Finalissima with La Albiceleste against Italy and now the most important trophy. Seems as if he had to win just one to win the next ones. Due to Messi’s 7 goals and 3 assists, he became the Golden Ball winner for this edition, meaning he has won it Twice and more than any one else. Back in 2014, the Barca legend scored 4 goals and gave 1 assist to help the South Americans reach the final for the first time since 1986. He bagged 5 Man of the match awards at Brazil and this year he won it 6 times, meaning that Messi has won more Man of the Match awards than any other player in this history with 11.

3. Lionel Messi is only the second South American to score 20+ goals Internationally – Messi has the most man of the match awards (11), most Golden Balls (2), most Ballon D’ors (7), most appearances as player (26) and as Captain (19). Its as if Messi just had to follow his passion of Football and the records would follow him. The Records are just not ending. At 35 years of age, Messi is also the first player to provide assists in 5 different WC editions. He made his debut as a 19 year old in 2006, then 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. In all of those editions Messi has provided chances for others to finish. Now let’s come back to the 3rd record he would set last night, after scoring his third goal of the night against France during Penalties, the star Argentinian joined former World cup winner Ronaldo Nazario from Brazil to score 25 goals in World cup, International friendlies and Copa America.

Just an added information is that Messi will still play for his national side even after winning the WC and head coach Lionel Scaloni has said that Messi’s jersey will be ready if he wants to play in the next World cup at USA in 2026.
