Mohammed Siraj struck early to dismiss Usman Khawaja, giving India a strong start on Day 1 of the Border-Gavaskar series 1st Test match against Australia in Nagpur. Siraj successfully trapped Khawaja with an inswinging delivery, and while the on-field umpire was first unconvinced, skipper Rohit Sharma’s quick review allowed India to take the opening wicket of the match.

The India cricketers’ celebrations made it plain how significant the wicket was, and even head coach Rahul Dravid could not contain his joy as he was seen rejoicing with the support staff in the dressing room.

At the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Australia’s captain Pat Cummins made the decision to bat after winning the toss. Suryakumar Yadav, a charismatic middle-order batsman for India in Twenty20 cricket, made his Test debut alongside wicketkeeper KS Bharat, with Todd Murphy receiving the Baggy Green from the Cummins-led Australia.

Suryakumar received the India cap from former India coach Ravi Shastri, and Bharat received it from Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara. Nathan Lyon, an Australian spinner and a part of the playing XI, handed Murphy the Baggy Green.

In a first, the BCCI invited the families of Suryakumar and Bharat to attend the Test cap presentation event inside the stadium. Rahul Dravid, the head coach, congratulated both India players and shook hands with their families.
