Previously, Mariano Pernia of Granada held the record for most goals scored by a defender in the 21st century. Mariano Pernia had 10 goals against his name in La Liga. However, Sergio Ramos has broken the record of the former Granada man with a thumping header against Leganes on the final matchday.

Sergio Ramos led the team by an example in La Liga after stepping up when Eden Hazard and other players failed to live-up the expectations at Santiago Bernabeu. Besides, breaking the record of most goals scored by a defender in a single season, the Spanish centre-back also overtook Ronald Koeman’s record. With the goal, he overtook the 67 goal tally of Dutchman and became the highest scoring defender in the history of Spanish top-tier.

Against Leganes, Real Madrid started the game on a high tempo. Sergio Ramos scored from Isco’s set-piece to give the lead to Los Blancos. Just before the half time, Leganes scored the equalizer through Bryn Gil to keep their hopes alive. However, Marco Asensio’s second goal to restore the lead sent tremors for Leganes in the 52nd minute, but the home side were far from being done. Though they netted the equalizer in the 78th minute, the team saw themselves getting relegated by a margin of one point from the Spanish top-tier.
