Ullalmath Gagan Biography: Adaveeshaiah Puttaveeraswamy Gagan Ullalmath, also known as Gagan Ullalmath, is one of the well-knowns swimmers in India. Gagan Ullalmath was the only swimmer from India to compete at the 2012 London Olympics.  He finished 7th in heat 1 of 1500 m freestyle event with a time of 16:31:14 and was eventually knocked out at last position 31st.

Under the same quota, he also competed at the World Championships in the 800 m freestyle held in Shanghai where he completed with a clock time of 8: 21.23.

Gagan has always been an above-average student in academics. Swimming kept him so much occupied that all he used to do was to read a book or any inspiring article that gradually developed a reading habit in him at a young age. The swimmer was greatly inspired by Laszlo Cseh, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. While many people tell Gagan that he is lucky but the swimmer from Bangalore believes that the harder an individual works, the luckier he or she gets. He experienced the amazing feeling of the Olympics. With many imprinted memories, he was honoured to participate in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Adaveeshaiah Puttaveeraswamy Gagan Ullalmath was born on 08 January 1992 in Bangalore, India. His parents are the backbone of his ultimate success. Especially, his mother, Sandhya M S, who has always supported him in his journey to success. He has two elder sisters who too are former state-level swimmers. When his sisters used to go for their swimming training, the little Gagan also accompanied them. Gradually, he cultivated an interest in swimming. Like an old saying “Behind every successful man is a woman”, Sandhya M S is the key factor in Gagan’s success. Without her selfless love & contributions, Gagan would have found it difficult to mark his name in the world of swimming. As a son, he never failed to recognize her silent sacrifices to make him an Olympian. He has always toiled to fulfil his mother’s dream.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Gagan Ullalmath gave up engineering to pursue his career in swimming. From a tender age, he worked harder on his fitness & physique to compete with foreign competitors in the future. All his hard work paid off when he got his ticket to the Summer Olympics 2012. The swimmer was completely shocked to find his name in the Olympics contingent. When his destiny wanted him to represent his homeland at the London Olympics, on the other side the swimmer faced many criticisms about he “not being the correct choice for London Games”. Many raised numerous questions on his selection under quota. Initially, Gagan did felt bad but he decided to not let anything affect his performance and focus on swimming. For Olympics 2012, Gagan used to cover 80-90 kilometres a week that made him tough both mentally and physically. Meanwhile, he also faced many challenges in his office.

Adaveeshaiah Puttaveeraswamy Gagan Ullalmath became the first and only swimmer who represented India in the 2012 Summer Olympics where he finished in the 31st position with a clock time of 16:31:14 in 1500 m freestyle discipline. Although he was knocked out of the competition, he showcased an excellent performance.

Gagan Ullalmath is currently working in the income tax department. Despite lack of financial backdrop Gagan Ullalmath has always wished to start a swim club for professional swimmers.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Won 2 Silver’s at Junior National Events 2006, Chennai.
  • Won 4 Gold’s in National Aquatic Champion Ship Amritsar, 2008 and got a berth in the Indian Team for the Youth Common Wealth Games at Pune and subsequently finished 4th in FS Relay in Pune.
  • Won 2 Golds and 1 silver at the 6th Asian Age Group Championships 2009, Japan. In Group I 800 meters. FS won Gold with New Record timing 08:26:57 and broke the earlier record held by Sheng Chiah Tang 08:30:43 in the year 2005.
  • Won 7 Gold Medals in 2009 Junior Nationals held in Jaipur and adjudged individual Championship in Group-I.
  • Won a gold medal In South Asian Games Dhaka, Feb 2010 with a record timing of 4.04.84 bettering Mr. Rehan Ponch’s Games record by 01.10 seconds in 400M FS.
  • Bagged 6 Gold’s and 2 Bronze medals in National Games 2011, held at Ranchi, Jharkhand.
  • Participated in Olympics 2012 held at London finishing in 31st position in 1500 freestyle.
