Manish Singh Rawat: Age, Personal Life, Stats, Achievements & Net Worth

From working in a hotel as a waiter to representing India in the 2016 Rio Olympics, Manish Singh Rawat’s story is as inspiring as it can be. Hailing from a state where most of the people aren’t even aware of a sport named Racewalking, Manish has put India to the world map of Racewalking.

Manish Singh Rawat is an Indian racewalker who competes in the 20 and 50km events. A valuable part of India’s racewalking squad for the last three years, Manish Singh Rawat finished 13th in the racewalking event at 2016 Rio Olympics.

He is currently being supported by GoSports Foundation through the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme.

EARLY LIFE: FROM WORKING IN A HOTEL AS A WAITER TO COMPETING IN RIO OLYMPICS

Hailing from Chamoli village in Uttarakhand, Manish Singh Rawat was born in a family of modest means. The Indian athlete used to walk for 7kms each way to school.

“I didn’t learn of racewalking till I was in class 8 or 9. When I was playing cricket, to reach my school I had to walk 7 km up and 7 km down, so I was used to this. Walking is an integral part of Uttarakhand’s culture; I think that is why we are generally fitter than rest of the country.” Manish told in an interview with Sportskeeda.

A state with not much of a background in racewalking, Manish didn’t have much people to compete against while he was growing up.

Manish’s father passed away when he was only in class 10. He used to work in a hotel as a waiter and would only get Rs. 1500, helping his family survive the entire month with that money.

Manish has been a farmer, a dishwasher, a labour guy in a farm and has even driven tractors.

While other athletes train on tracks with quality equipment, Manish walked on the hilly terrain with torn shoes.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER:

A track and field event, racewalking is no easy sport given at no-point your feet can be mid-air and doing so would risk being disqualified. Apart from the inherent stamina, technique, and fitness required in any long-distance race, walking tests your mental focus like no other sport.

Manish was in the news for the first time when he competed in the 50km discipline at the 2015 World Championship in Athletics, held in Bejing, China. At the 2015 IAFF Race Walking Challenge, he completed the 20km race in1 hour 20 minutes and 50 seconds.

Not having enough funds to support his training, Manish at one point decided to quit racewalking, however, his coach resisted him from doing so, and motivated him to continue training and keep dreaming.

Few years after Manish gained fruits when he secured his berth at the 2016 Rio Olympics, notching up the qualification mark. He clocked 1:22:50 at the IAAF Racewalking Challenge, finishing ninth in the event.

Sadly, one day before the race, he injured his knee but the determined Manish competed in the event. He clocked 1:21:21 in the 20km event and finished 13 at the 2016 Rio Olympics. While he defeated 4 former World champions, three Asian Champions, 2 European Champions and even 2 Olympic medallists in the race, Manish expressed his disappointment for not winning a medal for the nation at the perennial event.

“Sirji, ab wapas gaon jaake kya muh dikhaunga? Bola tha medal leke hi aaunga, nahi hua. Bas 10 second sir, bas 10 second better karta toh medal ka chance tha. Aapko pata hai India mein racewalking koi nahi dekhta, yehi chance tha Sir, ab 4 saal aur wait karna padega” he was quoted as saying to Sportskeeda.
