Early Life and National Career

Rourkela is known for producing in-numerous talented Hockey players who have reached the summit of the sport. Most of players coming from the region have unprivileged backgrounds and after a lot of hardships players reach the International level. Nilam Sanjeep Xess is one such player who has the same story. After coming from humble beginnings, Sanjeep accelerated his game play and won Medals after medals.

He was born in a family of peasants but because of the popularity of Hockey, Nilam Sanjeep picked up a stick from a very young age itself. He could have chosen a career in Football as well but the national sport always had a separate spot in his heart. After learning about the rules and regulations of Hockey, Sanjeep came in contact with renowned and qualified coaches who helped him improving his game further more.

Sanjeep is a defender and later on he was guided by former Indian Defender Birendra Lakra, who helped him understand the tactical side of being a defender. By 2010, he started taking the sport even more seriously and took his game to the next level. As a result it did not take him much longer to get noticed by the kingpins of Hockey and all thanks to the coaches and Lakra’s influence, he got selected to play for Sports Hostel.

Nilam Sanjeep scored twice during the final of the 51st Bombay Gold Cup tournament against Punjab National Bank. He was representing Secunderabad and his performance at the finale ensured the title and prize money of 3 Lakhs INR to his team. Secunderabad went on to win the match by 4-2.

During the 2nd Khelo India Youth games held at Pune, Sanjeep was the captain of Odisha U-21 Hockey team which bagged home the gold medal in 2019. He was also a part of the Kalinga Lancers’ side which won the the 5th Hockey India League in 2017. In 2016 he was a part of the Hockey Odisha Men’s team that won Bronze during the 1st Hockey India 5-a side Senior National championship at Pune’s Balewadi Stadium. The same year during the 6th Junior Men’s Hockey Championship, he was a part of the Odisha team that retrained the title successfully.

International Career

Since making his senior debut in 2016, Nilam Sanjeep Xess has won a number of laurels with India.  To begin with, during the 12th South Asian games held at Guwahati and Shillong, he was a part of the Indian team that became Silver Medalists. Later that year, during the 4th U-18 Asia Cup, he led the Indian team towards a Gold Medal.

While representing the Indian youth team during the 5-nation U-23 Men’s hockey tournament at Belgium, he won Bronze medal with the team.

The defender is going to play alongside some of the biggest names of Hockey at the World cup. He could possibly rub his shoulders with players like Harmanpreet Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas among others. The 24-year-old will look forward to improve the technical side of his game before the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 at Bhuvaneshwar and Rourkela begins.
