Savita Punia is the Indian Women’s Team Hockey Goalkeeper from Haryana. She was the part of several national and international fixtures that helped the Indian women’s team to scale and achieve glory. Savita Punia was instrumental in Indian Women’s Hockey team achievement in the Olympics 2020 campaign.

Savita Punia Personal Life

Savita Punia was born in Sirsa, Haryana. She was born on 11th July 1990 in Jodhkan Village of Sirsa of Haryana. The player was put into the boarding school for better focus where she was encouraged by her grandfather Mahinder Singh to take up the sport. She was enrolled in sports academy and later into Sports Authority of India (SAI).

 

Savita Punia Professional Life

Savita’s professional life kickstarted when she was enrolled at Sports Authority of India. Though she was not interested in the early part of the games, the interest grew with her coach taking additional interest in her training.

The player was picked up for the maiden national camp in 2007 and got coached by the top goalkeepers. Savita Punia was selected for the first international tour in 2008 which was a four-nation event in Netherlands and Germany. However, the wait was longer as she made her first international debut in 2011. Since then, she has played over 100 games for the national team.

When she qualified for the national team in 2007, she was just 17. In 2009, she participated as a member of the team that went to Junior Asia Cup. She saved two potential goals in the 8th Women’s Asia Cup in Malaysia that helped the team to win a Bronze medal in the tournament in 2013. She was also a part of the bronze-winning team at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

In 2016, Savita Punia put up a great show for the national team against Japan in the last 60 seconds by thwarting all the shots hurled at her through penalty. India was able to hold on to a 1-0 lead which helped the team to qualify for the Rio Olympics. In the Asia Cup of 2018, she pulled excellent saves to win the Goalkeeper of the Tournament Award. This also booked a spot in the World Cup 2018 in London.
