DP Manu Early Life

Manu was always into Javelin. He would practice by throwing bamboo sticks to horn his skills. His love for Javelin began when his high school teacher asked him to give it a try. After throwing the Javelin for the first time Manu was clear about which sport he wanted to pursue.

Growing up in Karnataka Manu did not have the necessary resources or a coach to train with. He admitted that he learned basic throwing techniques by watching YouTube videos of World record holder Zan Zelezny. But he finally got lucky when 2010 Commonwealth Game bronze medallist Kashinath Naik spotted his potential and took him under his wings. His parent is both farmers.

DP Manu Professional Life

There were a lot of skeptics when Manu decided to opt for Javelin’s throw as he did not have the physique to excel in the sport. His coach Kashinath Naik had to convince Army Sports Institute (ASI) to include him. Due to a lack of funds, Manu is careful about which events he participates in.

In 2019 he won the silver at the Inter-State Championship in Lucknow with a throw of 76.24m. He then continued to win the bronze at the Indian Grand Prix 2, Patiala with a throw of 75.28m.

It all changed when he saw Neeraj Chopra winning the Gold at the Tokyo Olympics. He saw stake rise for Indian Javelin throwers. He knew to achieve anything he must cross the 80m mark.  He achieved that on the 13th of March when he threw 82.43m at the Indian Grand Prix in Thiruvanthapuram.

He proved his doubters wrong when he threw a massive personal best of 84.35m to win the Inter-State championships in Chennai. Manu is now all but set to compete with the best in the Commonwealth Games this year in Birmingham, England. He will be second to Neeraj Chopra but would like to leave his mark in the competition.

DP Manu Commonwealth Games 2022

Neeraj Chopra will lead the Indian hopes for the medal in the men’s Javelin discipline but DP Manu who got his passport in 2021 is also a strong contender for the medal. Manu is determined to perform strongly not only in the Commonwealth Games but also in the Asian Games happening later this year.

Manu is now set the target of 84m in the training. With the best wishes from the people of India Manu is hoping for a great showing at the Commonwealth Games.
