Simona Halep signs up for Prague event, adds to US Open doubts

World number 2, Simona Halep has signed up for the Prague event in August, adding further doubt on her participation in the US Open.

Hi everyone. I can’t wait to take part in the tournament in the magnificent city of Prague. See you in August,” the reigning Wimbledon champion said in a video message posted by the event organisers.

“@Wimbledon champion and world number @Simona_Halep is looking forward to Prague Open 2020 and we are so looking forward to her tennis magic” Prague Open 2020 tweeted.

The Prague event is scheduled to commence from August 10th to August 16th. She will also play at the Palermo clay-court tournament which will take place from 3rd August and is also touted to be the first WTA competition since professional tennis has been suspended from March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Halep has hinted that she will only participate in the European events as the United States are currently at the top in terms of coronavirus cases and the total number of cases in America is more than 4 million which is a scary number.

Several top-class players have denied participating in the US Open this year including the likes of Roger Federer, who is recovering from his surgery, Nadal withdraws his name due to security reasons and Novak Djokovic’s participation is in suspect as he was recently diagnosed with coronavirus.

Halep is elated to play in the Prague event as she had never visited the country before and she is looking forward to doing that this year.

“I’m so excited… I’ve actually never been to Prague. I’ve heard it’s such a beautiful city, so I’m so looking forward to discovering it when I’m over there,

I want to thank the tournament for offering me a wildcard into this great event,” she concluded.
