Umran Malik is one of the enterprising Indian fast bowlers. The 23 year old has raised eyebrows already with his outrageously fast bowling. The bowler from Jammu and Kashmir is predominantly a right handed fast bowler and does right handed batting coming at No 11. He is known as Ghajini with Sunrisers Hyderabad and has already featured for the Indian national team. The player will look to further polish his bowling skills when he plays in the IPL 2023.
Early Life & Journey:
Umran Malik had humble innings to say the least. The player was born on 22nd November 1999 to a fruit seller family in Jammu and Kashmir. His father, Abdul Rashid, is a fruit seller to the date and Seema Begum runs the family. Umran Malik has two siblings.
Umran Malik did not have a fancy start to his cricket career. It was just his hobby to play the game. Jammu, to date, are yet to prove themselves on a stage like Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament. However, the Indian Premier League gave him an opportunity to showcase his skill on a bigger stage. The Sunrisers Hyderabad’s hinterland scouting provided the player an opportunity and selected him as one of the three net bowlers for Indian Premier League 2021. This event occurred in April.
Fast forward to October, Sunrisers Hyderabad were already out of the tournament and gave the player a chance to shine. He made his debut in the IPL against Kolkata Knight Riders. The player turned the heads around in the same season when he went on to bowl five successful dot deliveries at a speed of 150 kmph. Following his IPL success, the player was drafted as a net bowler to the India’s team that was traveling to 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup that was played in Australia.
The Board for Cricket Control in India selected him for India A to play against South Africa A and the player made his first class debut against the same side on 23rd November 2021. Umran Malik shined at every chance he got in the Indian Premier League. He was retained by the Hyderabad outfit for the 2022 season and he went onto pick his first wicket haul against Gujarat Titans. 2022 remained eventful and successful for the player. He made his international T20 debut and One Day debut in the span of four months.
Cricket & Stats
The speedster has played eight one day internationals and eight T20 internationals and is looking forward to making the test debut for India. In 16 games, he has already picked 24 wickets across two formats. His economy stands at 6.45 in ODIs whereas it is at 10.48 in T20 internationals.
Umran Malik made his T20 debut against Ireland on 26 June 2022 in Dublin. The game did not go well for the player as rain abruptly interrupted the game continuously and he could bowl only one over. He gave away 14 runs in that single over. His first T20 international wicket came in the second game of the same series where he dismissed Locran Tucker. However, his economy was beyond ten as he conceded 42 runs from four overs.
Umran Malik was handed his One Day international debut against New Zealand in Auckland. In his first game itself, he accounted for two wickets but the result did not go in India’s way. Even though he picked two wickets, he had conceded 65 runs in his ten overs. Even today, he is still looking to get his economy rate down.
