Preeja Sreedharan Biography: Preeja Sreedharan is one of the famous long-distance runners from India. The former athlete holds national records in both 10000 m & 5000 m events. Her significant achievements include a gold medal & silver medals in the Guangzhou Asian Games 2010. She has also been awarded the Arjuna Award for her valuable contributions to the sport.
EARLY LIFE
Preeja rose from one of the muddy tracks of a hilly district of Idukki, Kerala. From a very early age, the athlete dreamed to cover long distances that anyone could ever think of.
When most of the Indian athletes were into 400-800 m, Preeja Sreedharan chose for 5,000 and 10,000 m races. With P.R. Ranedran and Thankachan Mathew as coaches, Preeja soon emerged into India’s number one long-distance runner.
PERSONAL LIFE
Preeja Sreedharan was born on 13 March 1982 in Idukki, Kerala, India. She was born to Sreedharan and Remani.
Preeja has an elder brother named Pradeep and also an elder sister named Preethy.
The athlete has completed her graduation from the Alphonsa College in Pala.
In 2012, Preeja tied the knots with Deepak Gopinath on 11th November. They also also have a son named Darshan.
Today, the former athlete is working as a superintendent in the Southern Railway.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE
In 2006, Preeja finished 5th in 5000 m as well as 10,000 m at the Asian Games.
In 2007, the athlete earned silver medals in both events at the Asian Championships held in Amman.
In 2008, Preeja got qualified for the Beijing Olympics after acquiring a B qualifying mark, but she finished 25th in the 10000 m at the Olympics.
She got qualified for the Guangzhou Asian Games 2010 with a personal best of 31:50:28 m in the 10000 m. Preeja earned a silver at the event & broke the Indian National record as well. She bettered the national record (15:15.89 minutes) with her exceptional performance.
In 2014, Preeja was entitled as the fastest woman from India at the Delhi Half Marathon. In the same year, Preeja further competed at the Asian Games but she failed to earn a medal.
In 2015, the athlete shocked her fans with the announcement of retirement.
