M Sreeshankar Early Life
M Sreeshankar was born on 27th March 1999 in Palakkad Kerala. Sreeshankar would often accompany his father to practices as a kid when his father noticed his potential as a sprinter. Sreeshankar became a state-level under-10 champion in 50 meters and 100 meters but he chose the long jump over sprinting at the age of 13.

It is clear that Sreeshankar is a gifted athlete. His achievements at such young age are remarkable. In March 2018 he won the Federation Cup in Patiala by jumping 7.99m. Based on his performance he was included in the contingent for the 2018 Commonwealth Games but unfortunately had to pull out due to appendicitis. Despite this set back his strong will and determination saw him compete in the Asian Junior Athletics Championship just two months later. He won the bronze medal with a jump of 7.47 meters proving that he is one to watch out for in the future.
In September 2018 Sreeshankar broke the national record at the National Open Athletics Championships with a jump of 8.20m. It was also the world-leading jump of the season among under-20 athletes. This made him the first Indian athlete to qualify for the 2019 World Athletics Championships, a spectacular achievement for the young athlete.
Sreeshankar qualified for Tokyo Olympics by recording a jump of 8.26m, a new national record, at the Federation Cup in Patiala in March 2021. He made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to qualify for the final round of the long jump at the World Athletic Championships. He finished a respectable 7th with a jump of 7.96 m.

M Sreeshankar made people notice him when he became the only Indian male jumper to ever reach the finals of the World Athletics Championships. He eventually finished 7th with the best jump of 7.96m. The 23-year-old can be proud of the fact that no Indian male jumper has come this far and certainly nowhere close in their maiden World championships appearance.

M.Sreeshankar comes from a sports family. His father S. Murali is a former triple jump athlete who won the silver medal at the South Asian Game. He is now the coach to his son. His mother K.S.Bijimol is a silver medallist in 800m at the 1992 Asian Junior Athletics Championships. Talk about pressure for young Sreeshnaksr. His sister Sreeparvathy is a heptathlete.
