Abhishek Verma Biography: What started as a hobby, the sport of shooting has now turned into a profession for the lawyer-turned shooter, Abhishek Verma. Having started playing the sport as late as 25, Abhishek tasted success in a very short span of time. One of the prominent members of shooting squadron in India, Abhishek won a bronze medal in Men’s 10-metre air pistol in 2018. Abhishek made headlines when he won the Gold medal in Men’s 10m air pistol in 2019 Beijing World Cup.

At a time when the prominent shooters of India were practicing to hit the bull’s eye, Abhishek had devoted himself to law books. Growing up, he had no idea that he would become of the most successful shooters in India.

Abhishek holds a bachelor’s degree in technology and was pursuing a degree in Law when he first came to know about Shooting in 2015. Initially, the Indian shooter started playing the sport as a hobby but later he took it professionally and the rest is history.

I picked up shooting as a hobby about three years ago (in 2015) when my father was posted in Hisar. I used to go to a gym there and got to know that there was a shooting range nearby. That’s where I first picked up a gun.” he was quoted as saying to Times of India.

Abhishek for the first time participated in the All India University games and a fifth place in the even saw him participating in the Shooting Nationals in 2015. The Indian shooter, in fact, took part both 2015 and 2016 Shooting Nationals but ended up with unsatisfactory results.

He won the first medal in the Kerala Shooting Nationals which saw him rising to from 75th position to 12th.

Consistent performances in the trials helped him rise in the rankings and thereby participate in his first ISSF World Cup, held in Munich, Germany.

The year 2018 saw him rise through the ranks as he bagged a silver in the 10m air pistol event in the 2018 World Championships, held in Changwon. In the same year, he bagged a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol event Asian Games.

Abhishek won his first gold medal in the 2019 World Cup, held in Bejing. He clinched the title in 10m air pistol event.

He has recently made headlines, bagging a gold medal 10m air pistol event at the ongoing 2019 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Abhishek has been training under his personal coach Omender Singh since the time he earned an India call-up in 2018. He has moved from hometown Palwar in Haryana to Gurgaon for his training. He is currently preparing to earn a Gold for his nation in the upcoming Olympics, scheduled to be held from 24th July to 9th August.
