Wanindu Hasaranga Early Life
Wanindu Hasaranga started his cricket career as a Richmond College, Galle student. In 2016 Wanindu represented Sri Lanka in the Under-19 world cup held in Bangladesh.
Wanindu Hasaranga Domestic Career
In the AIA Premier Limited Over Tournament on November 30, 2015, Hasaranga made his List A debut. He was selected for Sri Lanka’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup squad in December 2015. In the 2015–16 Premier League Tournament, he made his first-class debut for Sri Lanka Ports Authority Cricket Club on February 26, 2016.
At Sri Lanka Cricket’s annual awards in November 2017, Hasaranga was awarded the most promising player in domestic cricket for the 2016–17 season.In the 2017–18 Bangladesh Premier League, he made his Twenty20 debut for Sylhet Sixers on November 11, 2017. Hasaranga was picked to Colombo’s squad for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament in March 2018.
He was also picked in Colombo’s squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament the following month. He was appointed to Dambulla’s squad for the 2018 SLC T20 League in August 2018. Hasaranga was Colombo Cricket Club’s best run scorer in the 2018–19 Premier League Tournament, scoring 765 runs in nine matches. Hewas picked to Galle’s squad for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament in March 2019. He was selected by the Jaffna Stallions for the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League in October 2020.After taking seventeen wickets, he was named the tournament’s player of the tournament.
Hasaranga was named to the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad for the second phase of the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) in the United Arab Emirates in August 2021.On September 20, 2021, he made his IPL debut against Kolkata Knight Riders. While this year, Hasaranga was bagged by the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Wanindu Hasaranga International Career
On July 2, 2017, he made his ODI debut for Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe. He became the youngest bowler to scalp a hat-trick on debut in an ODI when he claimed the final three Zimbabwe wickets of the innings.After Bangladeshi Taijul Islam and South African Kagiso Rabada, he became the third debutant in ODI history to score a hat-trick. He also became the first leg-spinner in ODI history to take a hat-trick.
Hasaranga was one of 33 cricketers who was given a national contract by Sri Lanka Cricket ahead of the 2018–19 season in May 2018. He was picked for Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 International (T20I) team for the series against New Zealand in August. On September 1, 2019, he made his T20I debut for Sri Lanka against New Zealand.
Hasaranga was selected in Sri Lanka’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup team in September 2021. Hasaranga made history by becoming the first Sri Lankan bowler to take a hat-trick in a T20 World Cup match against South Africa on October 30, 2021. He took his 50th wicket in T20I cricket on November 1st, 2021, in a match versus England. Wanindu Hasaranga was named in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year, as well as the ICC Men’s T20I Team of the Year, during the annual ICC Awards in January 2022.
