The Argentine international matched the record of Xavi’s assists in the previous week with the 20th assist of the season against Real Valladolid. Barcelona were victorious by a margin of one goal against the battling side. The Spanish midfielder, Xavi held the record of most assists in a season when he had 20 assists in 2008/09. However, no player had broken the record and now his former teammate, Lionel Messi broke the record.
In the game against Deportivo Alaves, Lionel Messi not only added an assist but also scored twice to go five goals ahead of Los Blancos striker, Karim Benzema. In the 2019/20 season, Lionel Messi has 25 goals and 21 assists to his name.
