Jitu Rai Biography: Indian shooter, Jitu Rai specializes in the 10 m air pistol event. The Khel Ratna Awardee hails from Nepal. The Junior Commissioner Officer has an excellent mark in shooting’s record book.


The shooter started his shooting from the Army squad. Despite facing many rejections and losses the shooter kept chasing his dream and ended up winning gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where he even broke the record with his final score. The Nepal migrant is an appropriate synonym of determination.


Jitu Rai was born on 26 August 1987 in Sankhuwasabha, Nepal. The fourth son among five siblings, Jitu was a Naib Subedar in the 11 Gorkha Rifles of Indian Army. The shooter was born and brought up in Nepal but then moved to India. In 2006, he joined the Indian Army. The naturalized citizen of India also owns a certificate of participation at the National Games 2011.

Jitu started his career in the    Army’s shooting squad (2010-2011), but unfortunately, he failed to the expectations & was sent back which indirectly put an end to his training in the Army Marksmanship Unit, Mhow.


Jitu earned a silver medal at the 2014 ISSF World Cup in the 10 m air pistol event in Munich. After his victory in ISSF World Cup, he earned a gold medal & a silver medal in Maribor; He won three more medals at the World Cup within 10 days & became the first individual from India to win two medals at World Cup. In 2014, his achievements made him rank 1in the world in 10 m air pistol and also rank 4th in 50 m pistols.

In 2014, Jitu created another record in the qualification round (50 m pistol event) with 562 points at Commonwealth Games. In the final of the same event, he earned a gold medal with a score of 194.1.

In 2014, Jitu further won a gold medal at the Asian Games in the 50 m pistol discipline. He also earned a bronze medal in Men’s 10 m air pistol team discipline.

In 2016, he earned silver in the 10 m air pistol at the ISSF World Cup in Baku.

After his break, he came back more strongly and competed in the 10 m air pistol event at Olympics. Unfortunately, he finished at last and failed. Even after losing his form, the shooter didn’t let his passion for the sport. Jitu was still after 50 m pistol event. He kept practicing & worked on his skills to prove himself.

After a tough time, he participated in the Commonwealth    Games. In 2018, the shooter broke another record at the Commonwealth Games in the 10 m air pistol by scoring 235.1. Jitu’s hard work came back to him in the form of a gold medal which was the second gold of his shooting career.
