One of the emerging athletes in the sport of wrestling, Amit Kumar Dahiya is a 25-year-old wrestler competes in the 55 kg event. He has participated in numerous national & international competitions and also became the youngest Indian to compete at the Olympics.

EARLY LIFE

Despite insufficient resources, Amit’s family never stopped him to build his wrestling career and supported him with what all they had. At the age of 18, Amit Kumar Dahiya competed at the London Games 2012 & became India’s youngest wrestler to participate at the Olympics. At an early age, he gave a promise to himself for a bright future. His promise held true as after one year; he successfully earned a silver medal at the World Championship and a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. But little did he know that it will turn out to be his last international medal! In 2016, Amit Kumar suffered a right knee injury.

PERSONAL LIFE

 

Amit Kumar Dahiya was born on 15th December 1993 in Nahri Village, Sonipat district in Haryana. He was born to Narender Dahiya and Sheela Devi. He has two elder brothers namely Dushyant Dahiya and Sanju Dahiya. Amit began the wrestling journey at the age of 7. He was in second class when he defeated a seventh class student in a casual wrestling match in his school. Amit’s father noticed his potential and always termed him as a “born wrestler”. Narender Dahiya trained Amit in his initial three years. The little Amit surprised his parents, villagers, and teachers. Gradually, Amit received immense support from everyone around him.

Like most wrestlers, Amit too has gone through some worst days. Amit’s rise on his mat resulted in a turnaround for his family. Amit’s family has struggled to make every end meet. Amit’s father sold milk for a living. But how bad their situation was, the Dahiya family never lost their hope. They earlier lived in a house that was lead through a dirt road. But once Amit scaled the lofty heights in wrestling, their misery came to an end. With his cash awards, they bought a plot & built a house. Amit’s performance on the mat not only made India proud but also helped his family to drive from oblivion to glory.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

After noticing his determination for wrestling, Amit’s father took him to the Chhatrasal Stadium for his professional training. After guiding him for three years, Narender Dahiya moved Amit to a new phase of his wrestling career with more facilities. Without wasting a second, Amit practiced every day. His hard work paid off when he clinched a medal at the World Championships.

In 2012, Amit Kumar Dahiya competed at the Asian Wrestling Championships where he earned a bronze medal in the 55 kg freestyle discipline.

In 2013, Amit earned a silver medal in the 55 kg freestyle discipline at the World Wrestling Championships. Amit had to lose gold to Hassan Rahimi from Iran. In the same year, Amit participated at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2013 in New Delhi. He bagged a gold medal after defeating Yang Kyong-il in the 55 kg freestyle discipline.

In 2014, Amit Kumar Dahiya earned a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the men’s freestyle 57 kg discipline after defeating Ebikwemi nomo Welson from Nigeria. Following his achievement in the Commonwealth Games, Amit also participated in the Asian Games 2014 but unfortunately, the wrestler failed to repeat his feat in Commonwealth Games.
