Anju Bobby George Biography: Anju Bobby George is an Indian Track & field athlete who specializes in Long Jump and Triple Jump events. She is known for creating history by becoming the first-ever Indian woman athlete to win a medal in Athletics IAAF World Athletics Finals held in 2003.

EARLY LIFE:

Anju Bobby was born on 19th April 1977 in a  Cheeranchira village, Changanassery taluk, Kottayam, Kerala, in a Syrian Orthodox family. Her father K.T Markose introduced her to athletics when she was just a kid.

It was the sports teacher in Mr.P.V. Welsey at St. Annes School and Mr. K.P. Thomas, a Coach at CKM Koruthode School who taught her the basics of Athletics. Anju used to get good amount of training during her day as she worked on her basics.

She developed a lot of interest in sports day by day as she continued her training every day. Right during her childhood, her talent started coming into everyone’s notice.

She won her first-ever tournament when she was in her school. She won the 100m hurdles and relay race and finished 2nd in the Long Jump and High Jump events at the School Athletics meet in the year 1991-92.

Anju has a small and happy family consisting of her husband Bobby George and two of her children Aaron George and Andrea George. Her husband Bobby is known to be the biggest support in her life.

They both first met at the national camp in 1996 at a training session under coach P T Joseph. There they became friends and soon connected to each other. During that time Bobby was the national champion in Triple Jump.

He met an accident in 1998 and since then he became her physio, nutritionist and also her coach. In 2000 they both got married and a few years later had two kids named Aaron George and Andrea George.

Anju showed signs of her emerging talent school days when she had won the 100m hurdles and came second in the Long jump and High Jump. She started her professional career in Heptathlon but soon after she started concentrating on jump events. 

  • She won the medal in the Junior Asian Championship held in Delhi in 1996. 
  • She set the national record for triple jump in the Bangalore Federation Cup and a silver medal at the South Asian Federation Games in Nepal in 1999
  • In 2002, she won the gold medal in the 2002 Busan Asian Games. 
  • In 2001  she made a record in the Long Jump with 6.74 m at the National Circuit Meet at Thiruvananthapuram. She also won the gold medal in the triple jump and long jump in the Ludhiana National games. 
  • She won the Bronze medal in the long jump event by reaching the mark of 6.49 m at the 2002 Commonwealth Game in Manchester. 
  • In 2003, she won a bronze medal in the long jump event at the World Athletics Championships held in Paris.
  • In 2003 she won a gold medal at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games. 
  • Anju Bobby qualified for the 2004 Athens Olympics where she came fifth but at the same time set the national record of 6.83 m. It is still the national record.
  • In 2005 she won the gold medal in the women’s long jump at the 16th Asian Athletics Championship in Incheon City of South Korea.
  • She also won the gold medal at the IAAF World Athletics Final in 2005 with a leap of 6.75 m. (One of her best)

Anju was never involved in controversy until in 2005 when she was upgraded to the gold status from silver in the 2005 World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo. It was done because of the then Gold medalist Tatyana Kotova’s of Russia disqualification following the investigation over doping charges.

She was found guilty and hence Anju benefitted from the incident. But Anju Bobby George made it into the headlines in 2016 after she was accused by the former Kerala Sports Minister E.P Jayarajan of accusing her of corruption. However, later she was proved not guilty.
