Women’s U19 T20 WC : Sehrawat, Shafali and Parshavi, Future of Indian Women’s Cricket

The first Women’s U19 T20 World Cup has just one match left after two weeks of play including 16 national teams, with the championship match set for 13:45 local time on Sunday in Potchefstroom. India secured one of the last spots with their outstanding performance against New Zealand in the first semi-final on Friday. And in the second semifinal, England prevailed against Australia in a nail-biter to advance to Sunday’s championship game. Now, India and England will compete against each other in the final.

Though India’s journey has been quite well in the tournament, there are some outstanding players who led India to the finals. Three of the players who performed magnificently well for Team India are :

1. Shweta Sehrawat : Vice-captain of India Sehrawat made her tournament debut against South Africa with a mammoth 57-ball 92. In India’s second game, the opener from Delhi added another fifty. In the lead-up to this occasion, she received the honour of being chosen as the team’s captain for the five-match series against New Zealand. Sehrawat is renowned for her Virender Sehwag-like batting technique. She is the leading run scorer of the tournament. Sehrawat accumulated 292 runs in six innings to advance to the U19 World Cup final, and after six games, her incredible tournament average was 146.

2. Shafali Varma : Captain Shafali Varma-led India stormed into the tournament in a superb way. She has scored 147 runs with a strike rate of 213.04 at the conclusion of the Super Six stage, featuring in India’s victories over South Africa (45 from 16) and the UAE (78 from 34). In the semifinal against New Zealand, Skipper Shafali Verma (1/7) returned the best economy figures (1.75) of any Indian bowler across her four overs.

3. Parshavi Chopra : In the last match against New Zealand she took 3 wickets and led her team to make the spot in final. Parshavi also comes in the list of best bowling figures in an innings as she took 4 wickets in a match which was her best performance in the tournament yet. She has been the rising star for the team and performed magnificently well in the tournament.
