Sunil Gavaskar backs Virat Kohli to come back stronger against Pakistan in T20 World Cup 2024
India’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener against Ireland saw a rare failure of batting maestro Virat Kohli. The right-hand batter was dismissed for just one run. Kohli’s dismal performance sent shivers down the spines of Indian fans, however, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar backs Kohli to come back stronger against Pakistan on June 9.
This forgettable outing marked a stark contrast to Kohli’s usual T20 World Cup dominance. Prior to the Ireland match, he boasted a phenomenal average of 81.5, with a history of converting a significant portion of his innings (14 out of 25) into scores exceeding 50 runs. However, a mistimed shot resulted in his lowest T20 World Cup score ever.

Despite this setback, veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar remains optimistic about Kohli’s return to form. He believes the champion batsman will bounce back stronger against India’s arch-rivals, Pakistan, in their upcoming encounter on June 9.
“The way I look at it is…great players like Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Babar Azam and Joe Root. They fail in one match; they wanna make up for it in the next match. They want to score double the runs. So whatever runs he might not have gotten (against Ireland), you know, he wants to score double the runs. And who better to score double the runs than against Pakistan,” said Gavaskar.
The 35-year-old has wonderful past performances in T20 World Cup run chases. He has a well-deserved reputation as a “chasemaster,” having anchored several successful chases with scores like 78*, 36*, 54, 57*, 72*, 23, 55*, and 82. His dismissal against Ireland was his lowest score ever in a T20 World Cup run chase for India.
Notably, Kohli’s past records speak volumes about him. He is the first batsman to achieve the remarkable feat of 4000 runs in T20 cricket. This accomplishment positions him as the leading run-scorer in T20 history, with a staggering 4038 runs accumulated in just 110 innings.
The upcoming clash against Pakistan presents a golden opportunity for Virat Kohli to silence his doubters and reclaim his dominance. With Rohit Sharma by his side, who reached a fifty against Ireland, the Indian batting line-up appears formidable. The entire nation will be eagerly watching to see if Kohli can rise to the occasion and deliver a match-winning performance, just as Gavaskar has predicted.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is a high-pressure tournament, and even the best players experience occasional hiccups. Kohli’s experience and hunger for success suggest that this might be a one-time blip. The upcoming match against Pakistan will be a crucial test, and if Gavaskar’s prediction holds true, fans can expect to see a vintage Kohli masterclass.
