IPL 2023 : Ravi Shashtri calls out Umran Malik for leaking 17 runs in an over during SRH vs DC!

At IPL 2022, Umran Malik was hailed as a better, more rounded player. Veterans and experts alike praised the young man, who was given his first India cap a month after the event, for his raw pace and ability to pick wickets. However, due to SRH’s inability to adapt and use him in the XI, the 24-year-old has had a rough start to the IPL 2023 season.

He has only taken five wickets in seven games at an economy rate of 10.35. Masters of the game Kevin Pietersen and Ravi Shastri criticised him after his dismal performance against the Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

After the powerplay concluded, Umran was added to the attack and faced off with Phil Salt and Mitchell Marsh, which resulted in a disastrous outcome. Umran let up 22 runs in that over while Marsh hammered him for back-to-back sixes while Salt began and concluded the over with boundaries.

Shastri and Pietersen were upset with Umran’s strategy and lack of clarity. The former India head coach suggested that the pacer should have changed his length and line after Marsh hit the fourth ball for a six over backward square leg while commentating.

He also noted that an experienced bowler like Bhuvneshwar Kumar must have whispered in his ear after allowing 17 runs in four deliveries.

“He just played into the hands of the opposition. He needs someone like a Bhuvneshwar Kumar next to him telling him what exactly needs to be done. You can still go for runs but you need to alter the length. You come out there bowl four deliveries, all same length, wrong line and he has gone for 17 runs already. He can even try cross seam. In a situation like this when you don’t have the confidence and you don’t know where it is going, go cross seam and full and into the stumps.” – ravi shashtri said.
