Is Todd Murphy the successor to Nathan Lyon in the Australian test team?

Australia is all set to tour India in the month of February and March for a four-match test series (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) and a three-match ODI series. They have announced an 18-man squad for the test series against India led by fast bowler Pat Cummins. There are many interesting inclusions in the squad but the most intriguing one is Todd Murphy, an off-spinner.

Todd Murphy, a 22-years old who plays for Victoria in the Australian domestic circuit, has also been named into the squad and is one of the four spinners that have been called up to tour India. It is an interesting selection as this is Murphy’s maiden call-up to the Australian test team and there is a very huge chance that he might get to don the baggy green as well.

Todd Murphy has not played much first-class cricket in his short career but has impressed a lot in whatever cricket he has played. He has bowled beautifully playing for Australia A, the Victorian team, and Prime Minister’s XI and can be a successor to Australian legend Nathan Lyon who has over 400 test wickets to his name.

In the Sheffield Shield season, he has 14 wickets to his name in just 3 matches and has shown the true potential to be one of the greats. He plays for the Sydney Sixers in the BBL and his teammate Steve O’Keefe was all praises for him. He said, “Todd Murphy’s as good an off-spinner as I’ve seen since Nathan Lyon.” The whole Australian squad for the tour to India is as below.
