IPL 2023 : Why was Harshal Patel removed from bowling the 20th over (1st innings) during RCB Vs CSK?

IPL 2023 is definitely giving us some top class moments and all of it will multiply in the days to come. All the new rules like – Impact player, DRS on No balls and Wides have become normal. A lot of aggression has also come into the fore and we have also seen sanctions lodged upon the players.

Last Sunday during Mumbai Indians’ victory over Kolkata Knight Riders, the likes of Nitish Rana, Hrithik Shokeen and Surya Kumar Yadav were slapped with a deduction in their match fees by 25%. Ace Indian batter Virat Kohli was also caught in the act during RCB’s tough loss by 8-runs against Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy.

The 35-year-old somewhat showed his true colors of passion and aggression which was not seen in a long time. His celebration was such that BCCI fined 10% off his match fee. Another thing that happened for the first time this season was Harshal Patel’s over getting cancelled.

The Real Reason –

In the 20th over of the 1st innings, Harshal was given the task of pausing the run flow but he ended up giving away extra runs. His first ball was an above the waist No ball, then after bowling the free hit and a wide, Harshal Patel pitched another over the waist beamer.

Now if we go by the rules and regulations of the No-balls, then according to an amendment in April 2019, if 2 above the waist balls have been bowled, the bowler will have to stop from proceeding. Above the waist beamers are considered to be extremely dangerous for the batters and that is the reason why Harshal Patel was dismissed and replaced by Glenn Maxwell.

The Australian went on to concede 9 runs and picked up an important wicket of Ravindra Jadeja in the final 4 balls of the inning.
