Indian women’s double tennis player Ankita Raina and Sania Mirza departs for Olympics 2020

Indian women’s double tennis players Ankita Raina and Sania Mirza depart for Tokyo Olympics 2020 from Hyderabad to participate in one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

This is the first time in the history of Indian tennis that no doubles men’s pair will be competing in the marquee event which will start from 23rd July 2021. The news related to the departure was confirmed by SAI.

Sania Mirza has become the first female athlete to represent India at the fourth Olympics with her participation in Tokyo 2020 while her partner Raina will be making her debut in Olympics.

Indian ace tennis player Sumit Nagal has also qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics on the basis of withdrawals in the men’s singles and will be joining the pair in Japan.

However, the first batch of athletes has already landed in Tokyo which includes players like MC Mary Kom, PV Sindhu, Atanu Das, and Deepika Kumari along with men and women’s hockey teams respectively.

Till now, Athletes and support staff of 13 different disciplines — badminton, archery, hockey, judo, swimming, weightlifting, gymnastics, shooting, boxing, rowing, sailing, weightlifting, and table tennis — have reached Japan.

The remaining contingent including players from sports categories like wrestling and athletics team is expected to join soon in Tokyo 2020.
