Gurpreet Singh is one of the well-known Indian shooters who has bagged two gold medals at 2010 Commonwealth Games. Gurpreet Singh has bagged numerous medals for his homeland and also represented India at 2016 Rio Olympics.
EARLY LIFE
Hailing from a remote village, Gurpreet Singh has struggled a lot to reach the podium of some of the prestigious Global competitions. In short, Gurpreet had a dramatic journey altogether. Gurpreet Singh became a shooter by accident after so many sacrifices.
PERSONAL LIFE
Gurpreet Singh was born on 19th December 1987 in the Tarn Taran district in Punjab. He belongs to a village where most of the villagers are army men. In fact, his village is entitled “faujiyoka mohalla” which means army men’s neighbourhood. Gurpreet’s three uncles work in the army and his father is an ex-army man. This is the reason why Gurpreet had a passion to become an army man and he ended up being one. He discovered shooting during his service.
Nobody in Gurpreet’s family was aware of the sport. Both his family members & villagers only knew about cricket. At first, Gurpreet faced many problems in order to convince his parents for shooting. He even sacrificed many things for shooting. Gurpreet hardly went to his home & villagers always asked his family about his comeback. While all the army men in his village visited their family for long months, Gurpreet Singh was away from his family for more than 10 months. Besides all the doubts, Gurpreet’s family did support him very soon and stood with him to achieve his goals.
PROFESSIONAL LIFE
Gurpreet Singh stepped into the world of shooting in 2004. He had no clue about the particular sport before that. After his joining in the army in 2004, Gurpreet underwent his coaching in Pune where an internal instructor came to hunt new talents. They asked Gurpreet to join the training system as he performed pretty well during his personal training. But gradually they discovered a talented shooter inside Gurpreet Singh. In 2004, he shot the gun for the first time in Pune during a training session. Without any idea, he became the only person to shoot a bull’s eye and that’s when an army man decided to become a professional shooter.
At his initial stage, Gurpreet found the gun to be a harder weapon to understand. He started with a 9 mm free pistol but he hit a good group at his first time only. After playing in an inter-services competition in Mhow, he got selected for the Army Marksmen Unit where he got the chance to shoot with a precision weapon. He got professional training to use it.
Once World Cups started in 2015, Gurpreet Singh began his countdown for the Olympics. Out of the four World Cups, two were passed out and Gurpreet eagerly wanted to secure a quota in the World Cup. His obsession with the Rio dream didn’t let him sit idle for a minute. Gurpreet kept training and didn’t stop even when his coach asked him to rest & stay a bit easy. His hard work filled him with confidence which helped him to attain a quota.
After a dip in his form at the Commonwealth Games 2010, the shooter really toiled to turn things around. The failure majorly affected the shooter & his confidence also went down. But he trained himself in 2011 and 2012 and did a comeback in 2013. He participated in the Asian Games and the World Championships & his stint won him a gold medal in the Asian Games.
