Bangladesh Cricket Team: The Bangladesh National Cricket Team has got a nickname called “The Tigers”. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was formed to administrate it. Bangladesh is a member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with Test and One Day International (ODI) status. It became the 9th test playing nation after playing the first Test match in November 2000.

History Of Bangladesh Cricket

Bangladesh Cricket Team: Bangladesh’s first official entry into international cricket came in the 1979 ICC Trophy in England. In 1986, Bangladesh played its first ODI match, against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. And they got qualified for its first Cricket World Cup to participate in England in 1999.

They made its steps towards success by defeating Pakistan and Scotland. In the year 2000 June 26, Bangladesh was granted full ICC membership. They haven’t played much of the games like other countries such as India, Australia, and England etc.

As of now, Bangladesh holds the record for most consecutive losses in 21 Tests matches between 2000 and 2002 and 23 ODI matches between 2001 and 2004. In 2005, Bangladesh won the test cricket series against Zimbabwe after losing many of the test cricket matches. In 2009, Bangladesh secured its first overseas Test series victory by winning against West Indies in their homeland.

As of 28 July 2018, Bangladesh has played 108 Tests and won 10. In March 2017, they played their 100th Test against Srilanka when they had toured to their homelands. The team is elevating over the years in ODIs, having won 118/353 matches. They have also played T20 and won 26/82. Bangladesh has grabbed the 9th rank in Tests, 7th rank in ODI’s, and 10th rank in T20s by ICC.

Bangladesh Cricket Growth (1999 –2003)

  • In 2000 November 13, Bangladesh played their inaugural Test match, hosting India in Dhaka. Bangladesh was defeated by India by 9 wickets.
  • In 1999, Mehrab Hossain scored the first-ever ODI hundred by an individual player for Bangladesh,
  • Aminul Islam Bulbul was the third person to have scored a century in Bangladesh team in their first Test cricket.
  • In 2003, South Africa hosted the 2003 World Cup Bangladesh lost 5/6 matches (one ended in no result).
  • This world cup gave Bangladesh to evolve and the Bangladesh Cricket Board decided to make the changes to the existing team Habibul Bashar replaced Khaled Mashud as captain and the Kamal was replaced by Dav Whatmore as a coach. Since 2003 many coaches were changed for Bangladesh Cricket team, however, the performance started to grow from Chandika Hathurusingha (2014–2017).

  • In 1975, they were not part of the ICC board hence not eligible.
  • In 1979, 1983, 1987, 1992, and 1996, they did not qualify.
  • In 1999, they entered the Group stage and took a 9/12 position. Total games played 5 out of which 2 won and 3 lost.
  • In 2003, they entered the Group stage and took a 13/14 position. Total games played 6 out of which 0 won, 5 lost and 1 not rated.
  • In 2007, they made it to Super Eights and placed 7/16 position. Total games played 9 out of which 3 won and 6 lost.
  • In 2011, they entered the Group stage and took a 9/14 position. Total games played 6 out which 3 won, 3 lost.
  • In 2015, they entered Quarter-final and grabbed 7/14 position. Total games played 7 out of which 3 won, 3 lost and 1 not rated.
  • Overall, they played 33 games out of 11 won, 20 lost and 2 not rated.

  • In 2007, they entered super 8 round. Placed  8/12 position. The total games played 5 out of which 1 won and 4 lost.
  • In 2009, 2010 entered the Group stage round. Both the years, they were placed 10/12 position. The total games played 2 out of which 2 were lost.
  • In 2012, they were stuck in Group stage round. Placed 9/12 position. The total games played 2 out of which 2 lost.
  • In 2014 and  2016, they entered Super 10 by grabbing 10/16 position for both the years.
  • In total 25 matches, 5 won, 19 lost and 1 not rated.
