In the Indian Premier League (IPL) there are bowlers, who work tirelessly to take wickets and restrict the other team’s score. The bowler with the most wickets throughout the IPL season gets a special reward – a prestigious purple cap, called the ‘Purple Cap’. Remember the first IPL season in 2008? The first Purple Cap belonged to Sohail Tanvir, a Pakistani bowler who played for the Rajasthan Royals. He impressed everyone by taking 22 wickets. The following year 2009, RP Singh, an Indian fast bowler with the Deccan Chargers (now defunct), bagged the Purple Cap with 23 wickets.

The next few years saw some exceptional spinners dominating the wicket-taking charts. Pragyan Ojha, an Indian left-arm spinner playing for the Deccan Chargers in 2010, displayed his skills by taking 21 wickets and winning the Purple Cap.

The year 2011 belonged to Lasith Malinga, a Sri Lankan fast bowler known for his slingy action and toe-crushing yorkers. While playing for the Mumbai Indians, he picked up a massive 28 wickets and secured the Purple Cap. The following year 2012, Morne Morkel, a tall South African fast bowler with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), grabbed the Purple Cap with 25 wickets.

The IPL isn’t just about specialist bowlers. In 2013, Dwayne Bravo, the West Indian all-rounder playing for the Chennai Super Kings, surprised everyone by becoming the highest wicket-taker with a staggering 32 dismissals. He repeated this feat again in 2015 with 26 wickets, proving his all-around talent.

In between Bravo’s reigns, another Indian pacer, Mohit Sharma, playing for the Chennai Super Kings in 2014, bagged the Purple Cap with 23 wickets.

The Purple Cap race isn’t just about spinners and all-rounders. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, a talented Indian swing bowler, showcased his accuracy and control by winning the Purple Cap twice – in 2016 and 2017 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad – taking 23 and 26 wickets respectively.

In 2018, it was Andrew Tye, an Australian fast bowler with the Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), who surprised everyone with his variations and cutters, taking 24 wickets and winning the Purple Cap. The year 2019 saw another spin wizard, Imran Tahir, a South African leg-spinner playing for the Chennai Super Kings, grab the Purple Cap with 26 wickets.

The recent years have seen some phenomenal bowling performances. Kagiso Rabada, a young and fiery South African fast bowler, playing for the Delhi Capitals in 2020, set a new record by taking a whopping 30 wickets and securing the Purple Cap.

The following year, it was Harshal Patel, a talented Indian fast bowler with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, who emerged as the highest wicket-taker with an impressive 32 dismissals. In 2022, Yuzvendra Chahal, a skillful Indian leg-spinner playing for the Rajasthan Royals, took 27 wickets and won the Purple Cap.

The latest Purple Cap belongs to Mohammed Shami, a well-known Indian fast bowler who played for the Gujarat Titans in 2023. He picked up a remarkable 28 wickets throughout the season.
