A Look at the Top Three Super Over Moments in IPL History

T20 cricket is very well known for its uncertain nature. More often than not, it is difficult to predict the results before the last ball being balled. The edge of the seat experience is the X-factor that attracts the audience to this format.

The Super Over format was introduced in the Indian Premier League in 2009, as a tiebreaker mechanism when the scores ended up in a tie situation. The inaugural Super Over had taken place between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals in 2009, with the latter coming out victorious. The 2020 IPL season witnessed the most Super Overs, with four matches requiring this tiebreaker to decide the winner.

Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals’ recent match marked the 15th Super Over in IPL history, with DC emerging victorious after all of it.

Though yesterday’s match saw IPL action at its peak, with moments of thrill and action keeping the audiences engaged throughout the match, let us see the top three moments where super overs dominated the game, more than anything else.

  1. CSK vs KXIP (2010):

This match between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab (formerly called) was special at that time because of the presence of two superstars, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh playing each other.

In this match against, KXIP scored 130 runs batting first. CSK batsmen could only score 9 in the final over and the match was tied. In the super over, Chennai scored 10 runs, thanks to Suresh Raina. Mahela Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh scored the runs comfortably and made it as one of the most thrilling super overs in the IPL history.

  1. SRH vs RCB (2013):

It was in the 2013 edition of IPL, one of the best super over in IPL history took place. Virat Kohli led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sangakkara led the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Batting first, SRH was limited to 130 runs. While chasing these runs, RCB finished the match in a tie.

In the super over, SRH scored a good total of 20 runs in one over. RCB chased this score with Chris Gayle’s strong shots but unfortunately fell short of 7 runs and made SRH the winners.

  1. Rajasthan Royals VS Kolkata Knight Riders (2014):

RR and KKR faced each other in a super over in the 2014 edition of IPL. This match in Abu Dhabi is touted as one of the most special kinds of super overs ever played. A tie in the tie. The main scores, as well as the first super over scores, were tied. Rajasthan Royals scored a total of 152 runs and Kolkata Knight Riders matched this score. In the first super over also, the scores were tied.

As per the IPL rules, if the super over scores are tied then the number of boundaries will determine the winner. If the number of boundaries is same, then the sixes will be considered. In this match, RR had scored 18 boundaries throughout the game whereas KKR had scored 14. This difference made RR the winners, making it one of the most controversial super overs even today.
