Women’s T20 Challenge – The Future of Women league cricket

Women’s T20 challenge concluded with Smriti Mandhana‘s Trailblazers denying hattrick of titles to Supernova’s. Velocity team led by Mithali Raj could not make the final. Total of four matches were played and by the time players got used to conditions at Sharjah Cricket ground tournament was over.

BCCI should try to make it a double round-robin league stage with teams playing each other twice so that teams have more chances to get into finals. As Velocity team experienced it one bad game and they went out on net run rate. A longer tournament will see more young Indian players getting chance and catching the eye of National team selectors.

Even though dew was there but spinners still ruled the tournament and we also saw a fifer taken for first time in Women’s T20 Challenge. Scores around 120-130s were not getting chased down easily. Foreign players also played their part with Dottin, Khaka, Selman, Atapattu, and then marquee player of the tournament in Sophie Ecclestone.

Trailblazers also had a player of Thailand team in their squad by name of Natthakan Chantam and she had her moments infield where she pulled of one of the saves of the tournament by an effort that would have made Brendon McCullam proud as well. Australian WBBL is also going on so lot more star players were not part of the squads. BCCI president Saurav Ganguly has promised a bigger tournament with more matches in coming time.

The longer tournament, more teams, no virus threat, lots of crowds watching hopefully all these wishes come true next year.
