Indian batting ace Virat Kohli has surpassed Chris Gayle to become the second highest run scorer in the history of ICC T20 world cup. Kohli slammed 62 off 44 balls against Netherlands during India’s Super 12 fixture played at the Sydney cricket ground yesterday. 

Virat Kohli not the only one to reach the 50-run mark as Captain Rohit Sharma and the flexible Suryakumar Yadav added 51 and 53 respectively. Their knocks saw India put up a total of 179 runs, which they were able to defend comfortably and won the match by 56 runs. This victory also boosted India’s net run rate at +1.425 and they sit at the top of Group B with 4 points

However, the best news for India is Virat Kohli rediscovering his form which is going to help the Indian side immensely throughout the tournament. The management as well as the fans are glad to see Kohli make his comeback in such a manner after a rough patch that lasted for almost 2 years.

Kohli’s purple patch was called as a Purple patch because he was unable to convert his fifties into Centuries. But it was all about that one day and one match that against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup where he scored his first T20 International century and since then Kohli has played some match winning knocks.

India’s first Super 12 fixture against Pakistan will go down as one of the best T20 matches ever as India stole the victory during the last ball of the game. That famous win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground wouldn’t have been possible without Virat kohli at the crease. Despite a slow start to his innings, Kohli switched gears when it was required and played some unbelievable cricketing shots. 

The 33-year-old received the support of All-rounder Hardik Pandya who eased the pressure on kohli by consistently sending the Pakistani bowlers to the stands and scored a crucial 40 off 37 balls. Virat Kohli on the other hand took on the bowlers and remained on the crease until the winning run was scored. His 82 off 53 balls helped India attain yet another win against Pakistan.

In the second Super 12 match against Netherlands, Virat Kohli took his over all tally to 989 runs surpassing the Universe boss Chris Gayle for the second spot in the list of of highest run scorers. The batting stalwart is now just 28 runs away from becoming the most successful batsman in the history of ICC T20 World Cup and we can expect to see it happen this year itself.
