Sehwag denies receiving offer for BCCI’s chief selector spot

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has denied reports that he was offered the role of chief selector by the BCCI. In an interview with Times of India, Sehwag said that he had not received any such offer.

“I have not received any offer from the BCCI for the role of chief selector, These reports are completely false,” said Sehwag.

Sehwag’s denial comes after reports in the Indian media that he was one of the frontrunners for the role. The BCCI is currently looking for a replacement for Chetan Sharma, who stepped down as chief selector months back.

Sehwag’s name has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the role, given his experience as a player and his knowledge of the game. However, Sehwag has made it clear that he is not interested in taking on the role.

“I am happy with my current role as a commentator and mentor, I want to continue to contribute to Indian cricket in this way,” Sehwag added.

The qualifying requirements are the same as in previous years. The candidate must have played at least 30 first-class games, seven Test matches, 10 ODIs, or both with five years after their last active cricket season.

There are some well-known cricketers from India’s North, like as Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Lucknow Super Giants coach Gautam Gambhir, however none of them qualify due to their retirement years. Sehwag is the sole candidate who fits the bill, and there were indications that the board has already contacted the great batter for the position. But the legendary opener denies any such offer made by the BCCI.

The appointment of a new chief selector is seen as being one of the most important decisions that the BCCI will make in the coming months. The new chief selector will be responsible for selecting the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup, as well as for the next cycle of Test matches.

It remains to be seen who the BCCI will appoint as the new chief selector. However, Sehwag’s denial of the reports that he was offered the role has certainly made the race for the role more interesting.
