Rovman Powell, a Jamaican cricketer who now serves as captain for the West Indies squad in T20I matches, was born on July 23, 1993. Powell led the West Indies as captain for the first time in an ODI match against Bangladesh in the month of December of the year 2018. At the domestic level, Rovman has represented Jamaica, the Combined Campuses and Colleges, and the Jamaica Tallawahs.
Early Life
Rovman Powell was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on July 23, of the year 1993. With his mother Joan Plumar and younger sister, he was raised in the Bannister neighborhood of Old Harbour Bay; his father abandoned his mother before he was even born.
Powell grew up in a family that struggled to make ends meet, caring for his sister as his mother worked many jobs. He was a student at Old Harbour High School and had previously worked as a goat herder. Later, he was given a sports scholarship to attend the University of the West Indies, where he studied social studies and geography.
Domestic career
Powell made his List A debut in the 2014–15 Regional Super50 in the month of January of the year 2015 while competing for the Combined Campuses against Guyana. Rovman Powell was chosen man of the match after taking 3/20 and scoring 31 runs in his debut. Powell played for Jamaica against Guyana in the Regional Four Day Competition of 2015–16, marking his first-class debut. Rovman went back to the Combined Campuses for the Regional Super50 for the 2015–16 season. Powell was crucial to Jamaica’s success in reaching the 2016–17 Regional Super50 final. Rovman Powell scored 95 runs off of 45 balls in the semi-final match against Trinidad and Tobago (with 9 sixes and 6 fours); this was a career-best List-A performance, and he was awarded the contest’s man of the match for it. The Jamaica Tallawahs then selected him in the sixth round of the 2017 CPL player draught.
Rovman Powell received a white-ball contract from Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the 2018–19 season in October 2018. Powell was chosen in October 2019 to lead Jamaica’s team in the Regional Super50 competition for the 2019–20 season. With 412 runs in eight games, Powell was Jamaica’s top run-scorer in the competition.
T20 Career
Rovman Powell was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders club for 30 lakhs in February 2017 in preparation for the 2017 Indian Premier League.
Rovman Powell was chosen for the Dhaka Dynamites team in the month of October of the year 2018 after the draught for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League. Powell was included on the Jamaica Tallawahs roster for the 2020 Caribbean Premier League in July of that year. Powell was signed by Peshawar Zalmi in April 2021 to participate in the rescheduled Pakistan Super League games. Rovman was chosen in the players’ draught for the 2021 Lanka Premier League to play for the Kandy Warriors in November 2021.
Rovman was purchased by the Delhi Capitals in the 2022 Indian Premier League auction in February of that year.
International Career
Against Sri Lanka in the second game of the tri-series, he played his first One Day International (ODI). On March 26, 2017, he played in his first Twenty20 international (T20I) match for the West Indies against Pakistan. Powell was listed as one of the 10 players to watch by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in February 2018 in advance of the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier competition. Powell was identified by the ICC as the rising star of the West Indies team following the end of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier campaign. Rovman was selected captain of the West Indies ODI team in December 2018, when the team traveled to Bangladesh.
With 107 runs from 53 balls in the third game against England in January 2022, Powell recorded his first century in T20I cricket.
